Sandusky seems determined for trial in abuse case

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky appears determined to hold out for a trial on child sexual abuse charges that could put him in prison for the rest of his life, legal experts said.

Sandusky has already laid out his potential defense, saying in an interview with Bob Costas of NBC television that he engaged in horseplay with alleged victims but stopped short of sexual intercourse or penetration, Mallios said.
"Now that he's said that, unless he recants or retracts that statement, that sort of locks him into that defense at trial," he said.
Legal analysts were baffled why Sandusky gave the interview, especially his rambling answer to the simple question whether he was attracted to boys.
Jeffrey Lindy, a Philadelphia attorney, said prosecutors often offered to drop charges in preliminary hearings, but that would not happen on Tuesday.
"I would assume there is no point in negotiating anything. The commonwealth (of Pennsylvania) is going to go full bore," said Lindy, who is a defense attorney in the sex abuse case involving the Catholic Church hierarchy in Philadelphia.

Given his age, I can’t imagine the prosecution offering a deal that wasn’t a “life” sentence. He doesn’t have any choice but go to trial.

Sandusky has one of those showboating lawyers (ala Hollywood Mark Geragos) who likes to see his face on TV. It will become a circus until some judge grows some guts to puts a gag order on. Running these victims through a preliminary hearing is unconscionable. Sandusky should waive it. The only reason they had to file for victims 9 & 10 was the first Judge was biased in favor of the perv and granted him a joke signature bond. Now he is once again back out with 10 felony counts on him. PA better wake up or they will reap the whirl wind on this one.

Correct. He will never be offered a plea that gets him less than an effective life sentence, so he prefers a trial in order to force his victims to relive his crimes.
Thanks to his stupidity by granting the interview, it should not be hard for the prosecution to get a conviction. Good riddance.
The scope and dimension of pedophilia perversion was exhibited when Sandusky actually went on TV-—with his lawyer coaching him——and said he was “attracted” to young girls and boys, and did “nothing more” than shower and horseplay with young boys.
