A 36-year-old West New York felon died early yesterday morning after crashing in a stolen car on 81st Street in North Bergen, police said.
Michael Maldonado was traveling westbound on 81st Street between Kennedy Boulevard and Tonnelle Avenue around 2 a.m. when he lost control of the 1997 Toyota Corolla he was driving, police said.
Maldonado slammed into a parked pickup truck and caused a chain reaction that damaged four other parked vehicles, police said. North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue firefighters had to use cutting equipment to get Maldonado out of the Toyota, police said.
Rushed to Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, Maldonado was pronounced dead at the hospital at 3:01 a.m., said Lt. Scott Sullivan, who didn't have specific information about Maldonado's injuries.
The Toyota was reported stolen Friday from the 200 block of 74th Street in North Bergen.
It is not known if Maldonado was involved with the theft of the vehicle, Sullivan said.
According to New Jersey Department of Corections of records, Maldonado was in prison from March 2007 to March 2009 for drug possession, threatening violence, and stalking.

The justice system should buy the owner of the car a new one, with a thank you note for saving a lot of money on trials and incarceration and so forth.
Now kiddies, don’t drive while high!
Funny, when I scanned the headline and saw the words New York Felon I immediately wondered what politician is in trouble now.
I avoid driving while low. That usually means I’m high.
