USA Today/Gallup Poll: Romney, Gingrich Beat Obama in 12 Swing States

President Barack Obama is in big trouble, with both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich leading him in a dozen key swing states, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Romney leads Obama among registered voters 48 percent to 43 percent in the 12 states the survey covers. And former House Speaker Gingrich leads the president 48 percent to 45 percent. Nationwide, Obama leads Gingrich 50 percent to 44 percent and Romney 47 percent to 46 percent, according to the poll.

The 12 states include Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Obama won all of them in 2008. Each could go either way next year, and Obama needs to win half of their electoral votes to gain a second term, according to USA Today.

The decrease in the number of voters who identify themselves as Democrats, coupled with the increase of those who call themselves independents, will make Obama’s re-election quest more difficult. Excluding those who lean Democratic, the portion of voters who identify themselves as Democrats has slipped to 30 percent from 35 percent in 2008. Meanwhile, the portion of independents has climbed to 42 percent from 35 percent.

In three of the eight swing states that have party registration — Colorado, Iowa, and New Hampshire — independents now outnumber both Republicans and Democrats.

That’s bad news for Obama,

But trends in ideological demographics are working for Republicans and against Democrats. In the swing states poll, 44 percent of respondents called themselves conservatives, more than doubling the 21 percent who called themselves liberal.

Assuming strong support among conservatives, the Republican nominee will need only a small portion of the 35 percent of voters who call themselves moderates to win the election. Obama, on the other

I’d like to see him try to suspend the 2012 elections. This is America, not Venevuela. Start a nuclear war huh? Right!

Tens of millions believe in Obama and always will

The youth are seen moving to Paul, if they get out to vote. This is after Obama's campus tours. Independents and Libs done with Obama are leaning toward the Dr. If he goes all Indy on us--then we may see a sudden rise in migraines. If this poll is at all accurate. The ones voting on race alone will stay true to Obama or not bother to vote at all.

Bachmann even seems to be inching up into double digits however so slight.

And this is registered voters, not likely voters. The later usually bends further in our direction. This is exquisite news.

The tsunami is starting to build.

Obama gets 5 states in 2012.

Romney can win two New England states (ME/NH) and Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan. Newt will loose those states... not saying that he would loose to Obama in the general ... but if you want a beat down, Mitt’s the guy.

Perhaps the Middle East is not so volatile in your eyes, but in mine a nuclear war between Iran and Israel is not outlandishly improbable. China has said it would defend Iran. We are committed to Israel. Yet Obama’s been distancing us from Israel right along, and that makes an attack on Israel more likely.
As for the 2012 elections, the Occupiers could very well cause such upheaval in 2012, that the electoral process would be disrupted. If Obama decided to “delay” elections because of widespread rioting, do you think the Congress would stop him? I don’t.
This is America, not Venezuela, but we’re getting closer and closer to Venezuela. A lot can happen in 11 months.
Better buckle up. :(

Tens of millions believe in Obama and always will no matter what happens...

...with 10-30% of them actual Americans and legal, registered voters.

Poppycock!
These deranged, so-called occupiers you are so hung up on.....um....how many towns(let alone entire states), have they been able to take over, let alone stop local governments from functioning? Here in New York, the NYPD has been able to stop these clowns whenever Bloomberg has ordered the NYPD to stop ,em. Just 3 days ago, the NYPD CRUSHED a mob of “occupiers” who tried to take over the Winter Gardens in the World Finacial Center. These jokers are getting clobbered even before we the citizenry have stepped in. I,d really love to see one of these lunatics try to stop me from voting in 2012. If Ghaddafi,s tanks and fighter bombers couldn,t stop a people etermined to get democracy, what makes you think we are going to sit idly by and let 0bama cancel presidential elections?
As for the middle east, if you think China is going to start a nuclear war because of a fight between Israel and Iran, you are living in cloud cuckooland. Of exactly what sttrategic/eonomic importance is Iran to China? What percentage of China’s exports go to Iran as compared to say, the USA?
As for Venezuela, America is not even close to being that country. Hey, is it just me or did the GOP annihilate the Democrats in the 2010 elections, despite all the doom laden predictions people like you right here on FR about how 0bama and his unions and whatnot were going to make sure the Democrats won?

So Republicans are 28%. 100 -(30+42)= 28 or less, 28-?

I would be interested in what the “conservatives” believe “conservatism” means. These polls all say there are far more voters claiming to be “conservatives” than “libs” but the actual voting generally belies that claim.

Since he isn’t a Commie traitor he is clearly better than Obama. I don’t like him at all but that fact is undeniable and critical. Control of the Senate and the House will pretty much control Romney or any other Republican.

China is not going to defend Iran in any sense but diplomatically. It has no treaty obliging it to do so and no military means of doing so particularly if Iran starts a war. But in any case there is virtually no scenario where China starts a war over Iran.

What is it going to do - attack Taiwan?

Hi, Teddy, The only difference between McCain and Newt is that McCain had a combover and Newt has a modified dutch boy paints haircut. If we run bloated, old retreads with white hair, we will lose again. I don’t like Newt cheating either while he was raking Clinton over the coals for bad behavior.

I will join you, Blue Turtle, in enthusiastically voting for ANYONE but Obama. However ‘bad’ or ‘imperfect’ some in the GOP field are, they are a far sight better than the President we have now. Also, the Senate needs to go GOP and THEN we’ll see the jobs numbers go up!

Romney is a closet socialist. If I want to vote for a socialist, I'll go register as a Democrat.

There is a reason why Rudy Giuliani supporters were zotted, and there is a reason why Jim Robinson has put Mitt Romney supporters on notice. A very good reason.
