The American Civil Liberties Union sued the State of Wisconsin on Tuesday over a new law requiring voters to show government-issued photo identification, charging that the measure violates the U.S. Constitution.
The lawsuit says that the state is infringing on some citizens' right to vote and to be treated equally under the law and amounts to a kind of poll tax on voters who lack the documents needed to get an approved ID.
Republican lawmakers and Gov. Scott Walker, who is named in the lawsuit along with a long list of other state officials, have said they believe the measure will withstand a court challenge.
The action came Tuesday ahead of a scheduled speech by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in which he vowed to enforce civil rights protections amid a flurry of voter ID laws recently passed around the country. The Wisconsin lawsuit was filed in federal court in Milwaukee by the national ACLU and its Wisconsin affiliate and the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty on behalf of a group of senior citizens, minorities and homeless residents.

Democrat operatives have the right to vote multiple times, under multiple names, whether those names are fictitious (as in “voters” registered at non-residence addresses) or those names belong to people who didn’t show up to vote.
I think the ACLU should be suing for the right for Republicans to do the same without fear of legal consequences.
Or they should drop the suit completely, and just admit what everyone knows: that their claims of supposed “disenfranchisement” are nothing more than cover for vote fraud. It would be nice, if the judge rules against them and states that outright in his/her legal opinion.
This doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell as the USSC decided it was constitutional in 2008 when the ACLU challenged Indiana’s Voter ID law.
Texas' new Photo Voter ID Bill currently sits on Eric Holder's desk awaiting his "review," as Texas (along with some other states) still is saddled by the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Thank God the state of Wisconsin does not require an ID to buy liquor and tobacco. These old people, poor, homeless, and blacks would not be able to buy liquor and tobacco if Wisconsin did have such a law.

Alas, it is worse than that. Before the law change all you did was state an address, then state a name living at that address. No signature, no ID. Oh, and if you can read upside-down, you don't even need the name ahead of time.
Hell, I need an ID to get cold medicine. Grrr.
When is the ACLU going to sue the government on behalf of gun ownership and the governments regulations to control it? NJ agrees I have the right to own a gun and a right to carry but try to get that done. Owning a gun costs money and time and forget about carry. I have to prove someone actually tried to kill me before the process of carry even begins and then it would take months. Come on ACLU, look after my interests!
Not showing your photo ID is ok as long as the ACLU will also sue over people having to show their ID to write a check or use a credit carc or buy booze.

So where does the Constitution require photo ID or a permit to buy or carry a firearm??
ACLU is running interference for the regime to clear the way in time to bus the union thugs and hoodrats from Chicago to “vote” in Walker’s recall and for 2012.
Why doesn’t our side, start suing the ACLU?

Similar provisions have been upheld before. They know they'll lose. They just want a restraining order so that they can enable cheating during the recall attempt against Governor Walker.
In fact in some states (i.e., MD) it is illegal to even walk around without ID.
