Philosophically, you'd think Rudy Giuliani might align more closely with Mitt Romney than with Newt Gingrich. So what's behind Rudy's recent statement that Gingrich could be the stronger candidate? And why did Giuliani go on Morning Joe today to trash Romney as "elitist" and "a man without a core, a man without a substance"?
Well, Rudy also reminded viewers that "I ran against him in '07, '08." And as Rich Lowry has observed, "in 2008, the other Republican candidates hated Romney." Just this morning, John Podhoretz tweeted: "Re: Rudy's attacks on Romney today. Remember: SOMETHING kept Rudy out of NH in '08 when it could have been a strong state for him." So Rudy's remarks could reflect the triumph of personal animus over political ideology.

Are Rudy’s resentments from ‘08 behind his trashing of Romney today? Ping to Today show list.
Rudy nailed Mittens on Fox this AM too.
This helps Newt about as much as O’Donnell helped Romney. ;-)
I don’t think that anyone who ran against Mitt in 2008 likes him, and most probably can’t stand him.
Agreed. While Rudy might identify more with Mitt’s RINO politics, he also identifies more with Newt’s zipper control problems.
Of course, this is a New York Pol.
The line forms on the right...
Don’t get all buttered-up folks. This is just politics. If you look closely, you’ll see Bill Bennett in the background. Bennett broke-off the handle trying to do a hatchet-job on Gingrich during the Hannity Show last night!
Rudy would be a great AG!
Not surprised that there were crickets heard since they DO NOT STOP FOR A MINUTE bashing Newt.
I may have problems with Rudy, but I loved him looking at Joe and saying that about Newt.
The northeastern, blue state politics of Giuliani and Romney are very close. Their personalities however are not. If all you had was a verbal contract with either man, which one would expect to perform, and which one would you expect to weasel or deny it entirely? Also, even within their blue state Rockefeller republicanism, Giuliani demonstrated competence and Romney did not. Achievers do not mix well with poseurs. Achievers will grit their teeth and be civil, but they are not ‘friends’ with empty suit ‘colleagues’.
Bennett has studied the philosophical foundations of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. His knowledge of the history of liberty vs. tyranny is superior to most.
He knows that of the present slate of "top tier" Republican candidates, only Gingrich, in a debate with Obama, could expose, rebut and defeat the tyrannical and bankrupt "redistributionist" ideas of Obama.
If Bennett puts the future of liberty ahead of Establishment Loyalty, then he might put aside old feelings, find a way to hold Gingrich accountable for strict adherence to constitutional principles, and acknowledge, as did America's Founders, that human beings are flawed and must be be limited in their capacity to do harm by constitutional restraints.
These two men who possess great intellectual abilities, if they could put aside arrogance and pride, could help millions of youth and young adult voters discover the ideas of liberty and, thereby, recognize the ideas of tyranny and dependency on government's coercive power over their lives.
A gun-grabbing Republican AG? Not gonna happen.
