Newt Gingrich says he’ll ignore attacks at GOP debate

FORT DODGE, IA — Ahead of the last debate before the Iowa caucuses — and an expected barrage of attacks from his rivals on stage — Newt Gingrich said Iowa voters shouldn’t expect him to engage.

“They can see the difference between someone trying to help the country and someone running a negative campaign,” Gingrich told a packed room at a meet-and-greet here Thursday.

Gingrich pushed that line in his second television advertisement released Thursday morning, saying to the camera, “we want solutions — others seem to be more focused on attacks.”

Speaking to Iowa Public Television in the morning, he said he regretted swiping at Mitt Romney Monday in response to the former Massachusetts governor’s suggestion that he should return the money he earned as an adviser to Freddie Mac.

Ignore the attacks. Can it even be done? Is it wise?

Yes, it can be done, but it will take discipline. Not sure Gingrich has that.

And absolutely it’s wise. Focus on Obama.

That is the problem when your opponent has the big $$$$$$
He can purchase all the air time and you can’t

Unfortunately Romney has a solid 20-25% base that know exactly what he is

The other 75% is spread over the other candidates

He should at least correct them or address it if it’s a true accusation.

From the article: “Gingrich has spent minimal time on the stump in Iowa. . .”

Either he is being lazy or figures that Iowa doesn’t matter.

Or, it’s incorrect.

True. But even if he does that well, it still does damage because he can't put the focus on his ideas, or Obama. As has been stated... If you spend all of your time defending, you're not winning...

If he can artfully turn those attacks into arguments as to why he would be the better candidate then it could end up being a plus.

The following link has detailed charts on the progress of candidates in the 2008 GOP primaries. I plan to print them out and compare to the current campaign(s). Who should we substitute for the 2008 candidates vs. current?

i.e. Paul = Paul
Romney = Romney
McCain = ?
Guliani = ?
Huckabee = ?
Fred Thompson = ?
Duncan Hunter = ?

Newt is a true master of the debating arts but he is in the same position now as a chess master who is pitted against the latest super computer programmed to play chess.

He is pitted not against a single opponent but against the combined intellect of everyone scheming to bring him down. This is the same thing the chess master faces, he is pitted against all the chess players who have programmed his opponent.

Newt stands against all the following...each contributing their bit of muscle to the effort to destroy him.

-His opponents on the stage.
-The moderators and their staff
-The RINO silk-panty republican establishment.

These are all busily working to create a gotcha moment for Newt tonight. That’s a lot of brains squaring off against Newt! If he can withstand all that combined he truly is the best man for the job.

(It is possible that the debate questions will be known to Romney ahead of time. If Newt ever faces Zero in debate it is a certainty that his opponent will be given the questions.)

Earlier today, I watched Megyn Kelly announce a shakeup in the latest polls showing Newt tanking to 2nd and 3rd place with Romney at the top.

While seeing his numbers come down concerns me, I think what bothered me most was how Kelly began the “breaking news”. The first words out of her mouth were, “THANK GOD”.... she was excited and giddy.

I have so had it with Fox News....

I think Newt can do it. He will turn the attacks on him into attacks on Obama.

Gingrich needs to focus on the Solutions he proposes at his website and not go into the mud.

Let others show that they have no substance.

I would say Bachmann=Duncan Hunter, because both were the most conservative in the field and dedicated to American national interests. Perry=Thompson, because both attracted conservative support but were shown to be poor communicators, although in different ways (Thompson: lazy; Perry: forgetful). Huckabee, obviously different but a little like Santorum in his appeal to social conservatives and weakness with others.

“we want solutions — others seem to be more focused on attacks.”

Well, Newt, some us are not ready to coronate someone with a relentlessly repeated desire to fraternize with the Left, and a fascination with quack futuristic ideas like global warming. The base is hungry for someone who is true to the Constitution and conservative ideals, as well as someone who can be trusted. As a serial adulterer and pal of Bill Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, you are neither. You expect us to believe that those were mistakes. Unfortunately, your career is a pattern of such mistakes, over and over.

Don’t let any poll numbers presented on Fox bother you. Fox uses only push-polls, not scientificly accurate polls.

This has always been true.

I kinda thought that before, but now it’s crystal clear.

I will no longer trust ANYTHING coming from Fox.
