Rick Perry Compares Himself To Tim Tebow At Iowa Debate
James Oliphant December 15, 2011. Rick Perry needs a fourth-quarter comeback to win in Iowa. So at the GOP debate in Sioux City on Thursday night, he compared himself to Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, who has captured the attention of NFL fans by leading his team to six consecutive wins, several in last-minute fashion.
In the first moments of the Fox News Channel debate, as the candidates each made the case for why he or she should be the Republican nominee, Perry quickly invoked Tebow. But the Texas governor, still foundering in the polls, wasnt simply trying to hook his wagon to a football star. He was also giving a coded shout-out to the religious conservatives so crucial to his candidacy in Iowa and elsewhere.
Perry has courted those voters with increasing frequency, releasing a controversial campaign ad last week that objected to service in the armed forces by openly gay men and women. Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for the University of Florida, is widely known to be a born-again Christian.

That would be pretty pathetic if somebody surged on account of comparing themselves to a football player.
What an insult to Tim Tebow.
Unfortunately, he ran to the dressing room, looked in the mirror and saw Oops the Texas Door Stop was still staring back at him
I don’t see it that way at all. Perry was very respectful to Tebow and said he’d aspire to be the Tim Tebow of the campaign, which is a sincere compliment.
And no, I’m not a “Perrybot”
There are a lot of folks that said Tim Tebow wasn't going to be a very good NFL quarterback. There are people that stood up and said, 'Well, he doesn't have the right throwing mechanisms, or he's not playing the game right,' " Perry said. And he won two national championships, and that looked pretty good. We were the national champions in job creation back in Texas. And so, am I ready for the next level? Let me tell you, I hope I am the Tim Tebow of the Iowa caucuses.
He had a pretty darn good debate, but a few big gaffes, too.
Stating that the Monroe Doctrine was used against Cubs in the 1960s? What?
The embassy quote was very confusing if you didn’t go back and re-listen. Not all that bad, though.
The U.S. should be building Mexico? Ugh.
Also, we get the point, Rick (Tebow comment): Perry is absolutely, positively the biggest, mostest Christianest candidate in the race, so help him, Jesus!
Still, he had an otherwise good night. Good job, Rick.
This was just as bad on his part as the the Texas Handshake Marriage Vows ploy
It was actually a pretty sensible thing for Perry to say.
I like it best when Perry stands next to Romney, and Mitt goes all bonkers about the book thing... I hope it happens again.
Watch the debate. Posting w/o knowing what you are talking about is pathetic
Wow at the Perry bashers! He was simply stating he was hoping to become the republican nominee against all odds just like Tim Tebow was expected not to be a great quarterback.
Which one is Joe Theismann?
Not quite as big of a gaffe as you want it to be. He did really great tonight and that is the big story. :-)
This was definately his best debate. More relaxed and genuine.
Wish there was a ‘like’ button on here.
Spot on lahargis...
An Iowa radio host said on the air that Santorum was the Republican’s Tebow. Perry stole the comment and made it about himself.
I saw the debate.
Perry’s a nice guy, but comparing himself to a popular/controversial football player in this context strikes me as inane pandering. I don’t like it.
...you know, there are a lot of folks that said Tim Tebow wasnt going to be a very good NFL quarterback, said the Texas Republican. And, you know, he won two national championships. And that looked pretty good. Were the national champions in job creation back in Texas. And so but am I ready for the next level?
Let me tell you, I hope I am the Tim Tebow of the Iowa Caucuses, added Mr. Perry.
The line, which received a standing applause, came within the first minutes of Thursday nights debate.
