To check or not to check the Asian box? That is the pointed choice faced by Asian-American students applying to gain admission to what are supposed to be the most tolerant places on Earth, the nation's colleges. The Associated Press ran a report on Asian students of mixed parentage checking "white," if possible, on their applications to avoid outing themselves as Asians. The Princeton Review Student Advantage Guide counsels Asian-American students not to check the race box and warns against sending a photo.
In a culture that makes so much of celebrating ethnic heritage, especially of racial minorities, and that values fairness above all, Asian-American students think that they need to hide their ethnicity because the college admissions process is so unfair. If African-American motorists fear that they will be pulled over by the cops for the phantom offense of "Driving While Black," these kids worry about what will happen to them when "Applying While Asian."
Studies have demonstrated what every Asian parent and kid knows: Asians are discriminated against in the admissions process. They are disadvantaged vis-a-vis other minorities and perhaps vis-a-vis whites. The Center for Equal Opportunity, a think tank opposed to racial preferences, in a 2005 study looked at a male applying to the University of Michigan from in state who had no parental connection to the school. If he had a 1240 SAT score and a 3.2 GPA, he had a 92 percent chance of admission if black and 88 percent if Latino.

Stephen Hsu, a professor of physics at the University of Oregon and an outspoken critic of current admission practices, laments that Asians seem strangely accepting of the unfair treatment of their children. The official Asian-American groups tend to support anti-Asian quotas because they are captives of liberal orthodoxy before all else.

I have a Jewish friend who is descended from Aaron, whose story is told in the book of Exodus. Aaron, in turn, was descended from Abraham. Aaron was born in Egypt, and Abraham was born in Asia, so my friend can call himself an Asian-American or an African-American.
If they were "really" smart, they'd name them Tyrone.
John and David are Asian names. John comes from the Hebrew name Yôḥanan, which means "God is generous," and David comes from the Semitic name Dāwīḏ, the name of ancient Israel's great king.
Yep, it’s a dilemma, all right.
Asian American families tend to be more close-knit and more supportive than others, and Asian American students tend to study harder than anyone else and, accordingly, get better grades than anyone else - clearly not fair.
The only solution, in modern America, is to handicap these people to make room for those who don’t study, don’t give a r*t’s ass, and contribute little or nothing to campus life, while taking much.
That, after all, is the new American way.
“My half Thai sons never had a problem with race. They do seem to prefer blond girls, which due to my Asian addicition I cant understand.”
Same here! I like to say my sons were “Assembled in USA from foreign and domestic components.” The older one used to say that since he was part Asian, he was supposed to be “sneaky”, LOL.
There is one way to keep racism alive, and that is to continue to treat “race” a largely artificial distinction based on physical features as relevant.
The only way to kill it is to prohibit the government, from recording or acknowledging anyone’s “race”, period.
Therefore I would suggest the following amendment to the United States Constitution:
“Neither the United States, nor the several states, nor any territory or federal district under the authority thereof, nor any agent, agency, corporation, or other entity operating under the authority of the executive, legislative, or judicial branches of the United States, the several states, or any territory or federal district shall make any distinction in law regarding the race, ethnicity, or ancestry of any person inhabiting the United States or any territory, federal district, or any other land under the authority thereof.
The officer, agent, or agency authorized by the Congress to carry out the enumeration of the population of the United States authorized by this constitution may ask questions in such enumeration regarding race or ancestry, but the answers to such questions may only be referenced for purposes of scientific research. Their use for any other purpose shall be prohibited by law.
This article shall not be so interpreted as to question the legal authority of any Indian Tribe as recognized by law prior to the first day of January in the year two-thousand one-hundred.
The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation, provided that the penalty for a violation shall be a fine of not less than one million dollars and not less than ten years imprisonment.”
That's it! I'm a transracial. I'm a half-black, half-asian, half-hispanic (yes, I know that's three halves) man trapped in a white man's body.
Along the same line as being “sneaky” -My youngest daughter is obsessed with Asian driver jokes. lol
As for "Asian babies", I had 1/2 of one to call my own, at least for awhile, until Iraq took him.
I wish I could take the pain away. God bless you and your family. There is a special place in Heaven for Marines.
Merry Christmas.
Absurd isn’t it!! The ‘race’ for education has caused this country much grief in my opinion.
I knew a couple many years ago, 100% Caucasian, who gave their daughter the middle name of Littlefeather so they could pass her as a native American for admission and scholarship purposes.
