To check or not to check the Asian box? That is the pointed choice faced by Asian-American students applying to gain admission to what are supposed to be the most tolerant places on Earth, the nation's colleges. The Associated Press ran a report on Asian students of mixed parentage checking "white," if possible, on their applications to avoid outing themselves as Asians. The Princeton Review Student Advantage Guide counsels Asian-American students not to check the race box and warns against sending a photo.
In a culture that makes so much of celebrating ethnic heritage, especially of racial minorities, and that values fairness above all, Asian-American students think that they need to hide their ethnicity because the college admissions process is so unfair. If African-American motorists fear that they will be pulled over by the cops for the phantom offense of "Driving While Black," these kids worry about what will happen to them when "Applying While Asian."
Studies have demonstrated what every Asian parent and kid knows: Asians are discriminated against in the admissions process. They are disadvantaged vis-a-vis other minorities and perhaps vis-a-vis whites. The Center for Equal Opportunity, a think tank opposed to racial preferences, in a 2005 study looked at a male applying to the University of Michigan from in state who had no parental connection to the school. If he had a 1240 SAT score and a 3.2 GPA, he had a 92 percent chance of admission if black and 88 percent if Latino.

Stephen Hsu, a professor of physics at the University of Oregon and an outspoken critic of current admission practices, laments that Asians seem strangely accepting of the unfair treatment of their children. The official Asian-American groups tend to support anti-Asian quotas because they are captives of liberal orthodoxy before all else.

Well, guess they are getting a little taste of what it’s like to be a WASP male in today’s society.
I know it sucks, but maybe now more of them will vote Republican next election as a result.
I’m “Hispanic” and feel the same way about the left-wing Hispanic-American group.
On a side note, most people think I am Italian! Kinda funny.
I’m seeing more and more Asian kids with “white” names, like John and David. Smart parents, doing their best to mask them.
When the whole “redlining” bullcrap was going on, the leftist agitators were all up in arms about the disparity of “white vs black” levels of approval for mortgage loans.
Yes, when loans were approved on the merits of the applicant, blacks were rejected at higher rates than whites. BUT, the agitators didn’t address the other disparity - Asians were approved at higher rates than whites.
All based, not on racial discrimination, but on financial ability to repay the loan.
There’s a Thai man in our office that gets mistaken for Mexican/Hispanic all the time. He says people will come up to him and start speaking Spanish to him.
I know one student that was denied admission to the University of Maryland. She had to go to Montgomery Community College for a year. I never understood why this happened since her G.P.A. was extremely high and she did super well on her SAT’s. Many of her white and black friends got admitted to Maryland with a much less G.P.A. and SAT score (I forgot to mention she is Asian). This type of discrimination (and I will call it that since admittance is being denied based on race rather than true merit) now has me wondering about my youngest daughter (adopted from China). Should she check “other” rather than Asian?! Shouldn’t she be admitted to a university based on her merit rather than her race?
Perhaps? This is a backhanded admission of discrimination against whites too, but don't wait for any special article about that.

It would be un-PC if anybody lamented that whites "seem strangely accepting of the unfair treatment of their children."
My children are mixed race, white and Asian. They are 1/4 Taiwanese. 3/4 white. When my youngest daughter was looking at colleges a few years ago, she noticed that in California- an Asian person needed a higher SAT to get into the colleges there. She quit checking Asian then. She is now “white”. My husband quit checking Asian years ago for the same reason.
A last name of Hu or Chu doesn’t provide a clue?
Do we still have affirmative action for certain ethnic groups? There is a strong case that WASP males have become the underclass in America and definitely underrepresented in Ivy League and Harvard. We need a box for them as a means to determine exactly how much underrepresented.
My half Thai sons never had a problem with race. They do seem to prefer blond girls, which due to my Asian addicition I can’t understand.
Its the leftists who obsess on race.
When you buy a gun, you have to — have to — list your race. What loathsome race-mongering.
My great aunt was Asian—a White (as opposed to Red) Russian born and raised in China.
ping
who has it worse asian males or females?
i also suppose that the high rate of asian-white intermarriage will solve this.
And if you were a Pakistani or Somali in England, you’d be listed as “Asian”.
In big round numbers, Asian kids need 100 SAT points more than white kids to get into a top-drawer undergrad program.
And white kids need **hundreds** of points more than hispanic or black kids.
