UPDATE 2: 12/16/11 9AMPST It appears early reports were wrong, junkscience.com now reports that
The deal agreed to in Congress merely deprives the Department oF Energy the funds to enforce the ban for 2012. The ban is still on the books so the DOE may very well get the money next year or the year after or who knows when.
Original post follows:
Blogging this from my cellphone.
Reports coming in from my sources say it was suspended tonight, more later.
UPDATE: from Politico -
The shutdown-averting budget bill will block federal light bulb efficiency standards, giving a win to House Republicans fighting the so-called ban on incandescent light bulbs.
GOP and Democratic sources tell POLITICO the final omnibus bill includes a rider defunding the Energy Departments standards for traditional incandescent light bulbs to be 30 percent more energy efficient.
From The Hill -
Omnibus spending legislation greenlighted by House and Senate negotiators Thursday night blocks Energy Department light bulb efficiency standards that have come under fire from conservatives in recent months.
The legislation, which would avert a government shutdown, prevents funding from being used for the implementation of certain Energy Department light bulb standards. The standards would begin phasing in next year.

So we can still buy 100-watt incandescent light bulbs on January 1. Question is, Who still makes 100-watt incandescent light bulbs? Nobody in the USA anymore.
If this is a win I hate to see what a loss looks like. What a joke
Just saw this in the comments to the article...video of (I think ) debate in the House on the action .:
Frankly, I like the new bulbs but then I've used flourescent most of my life (drafting). Beats incandescent all to hell. Most people don't realize that school and work all had flourescent bulbs and you've been using it for years and never complained.
When in school or at work, I don’t turn the lights on and off every time I enter or leave the room...
My bet. No 100 watt incandescent light bulbs at Home Depot or your local grocery store starting Jan 1 but plenty available at the local swap meets on Saturday. What a deal.

The rejoicing is premature; suspended enforcement, ban not overturned.
I have a detatched garage, and I use 100 watt bulbs to light it. If I had to use CFL’s in the dead of winter I could take the car out and be at the Ohio state line before they warmed up.
Try bulbs.com.
They stopped making light bulbs in the USA months ago. They did not suspend the ban, merely took money out of the budget to fund enforcement for one year. The pernicious law is still in place. If Home Depot sells 10,000 bulbs on Jan. 1, 2012, they cannot be prosecuted until Jan. 1, 2013, during the second Obama adminstration, when Ron Paul and Donald Trump peal off enough votes to hand the House and Senate back to Democrats. Attorney General Eric Holder will be quite pleased to go after them for the maximum penalty for each and every bulb they ever sold.
The only ones selling 100 watt bulbs will be internet fly by night operators, who will be well outside U.S. jurisdiction in 2012.
Another thred related to this....lots of discussion on it.:
if LED lighting proves itself to be as good and reliable as incandescent at a lower cost, then it will supplant those bulbs, which will die a natural death like any other obsolete technology.
These policy wonks have NO confidence in the power of markets.
it goes back to the Global Warming scam....and Green Energy movement to save the Earth.
Yes I did. Fluorescent light has a tendency to make me feel nauseous and light-headed. One big reason I hated school. As an adult it's a major reason I avoid shopping malls.
There’s a couple of reasons, and Gang Green is but one.
Global warming is the excuse they use, but of course, the communists are behind these assine laws because it advances control.
Leftists who need a reason to matter glom onto the “save the erf” movement because it makes them feel good about themselves.
There is a third reason that they are pushing for “energy efficiency”, even though lighting makes up about 3% of all electricity used. They don’t want to have to build new power plants or revamp the old ones, so they need to decrease demand.
News reporting is a great example of how entropy operates 24/7. :)
