Some folks need to learn how to sip.

My Tennessee brother-in-law visited and gave me a quart of moonshine. I'm afraid of drinking it. If I sip it, how do I tell if it's not dangerous? I just stare at the jar, thinking it's nice to be able to use my eyes.

Correction: “Mystery chemical drunk by idiots kills at least 133 in India...”

I’d be willing to bet some money that more people die every year choking on hot dogs, than drinking moonshine.

In India? !33 people get killed by elephants, and that’s in a slow week.

Never try to make moonshine right after a lunar eclipse. What nimrods for not knowing that one.

Okay, so, anyone who tries to take these two remarks seriously and excoriate me for them, a preemptive ‘be fruitful and multiply, but not in those words.’

Thanks Libloather.

My grandparents told me it killed a whole lot more people than that over here during Prohibition. Too many rank amateurs in the moonshine business who had no idea what they were doing.

Wait about 1 week. If it was bad stuff, it would be in the news. Here is a recipe I like: Take a mason jar and fill it up with a fruit (I like strawberries); pour moonshine into the jar until the jar is full. Close off the jar for about 2 months. After two months- enjoy.

I once had an interesting conversation with a moonshiner (who looked the part). I asked him what he did about fusel oil, which set him off on a lecture worthy of one of my PhD chemistry professors on all the steps he used to prevent fusel oil contamination. I decided that he knew what he was doing. His moonshine was pretty good.

My father passed away in 1988 and he and the sheriff of Sugar Island in the UP of Michigan use to set up a still and made great shine....no law enforcement to interfere. You got to the island by ferry and the sheriff would chase you off...LOL. Using lead pipe instead of copper (as far as I understand) was one of the problems with shine. Going blind was common during Prohibition as I understand...I don't know if that's why joints that sold liquor got the name of being a Blind Pig or not...

Thanks! I heard about dipping strawberries in, but I'll use your idea of soaking for a couple months.
