Syrian security forces have reportedly opened fire on anti-government protesters after hundreds of thousands took to the streets across the country.
Activists said at least six people had been killed in the restive central city of Homs, where 200,000 joined marches following Friday prayers.
There were also clashes in Hama, Deraa and Deir al-Zour.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 200,000 demonstrators came out in several districts of Homs on Friday, demanding that the Arab League stop extending a deadline is has given Damascus to end the crackdown and agree to an observer mission.
The Local Co-ordination Committees (LCC), an activist group which organises and documents the protests, said 17 civilians had been killed on Friday, including two women and four children. At least nine had died in Homs, three each in Deraa in Hama, and two in the suburbs of Damascus, its website reported.

The more they shoot, the greater will be the retribution.
Bye bye Assad.
Now, let the cow chips fall where they will.
My prediction, this Arab Spring is going to turn into one long ass Islamic polar night.
The whole region may go dark for decades if not longer.
Gees! The muzzies go to Friday prayer just to get whipped up into rioting and killing! How quaint.
Does it occur to anyone else that Hezbollah, Hamas, Al Fatah, Al Qaeda, the Taliban and other terrorist groups are silent as can be right now, regarding the Arab Spring.
If this was going to bode well for the peoples of the region, those terrorist organizations would be against what is taking place.
They don’t come out and openly support the Muslim Brotherhood.
If they were for it, it would make sense they wouldn’t support it openly. It would taint pro Western opinion. It would blunt Western help.
If this truly were an awakening in the region, they would be afraid of it or against it, and you couldn’t shut them up on the subject.
This IS NOT good folks.
There is a definite pattern of replacing regimes that tolerate Christianity with Islamic regimes that persecute Christians. Kosovo, Iraq, Egypt, and Libya have been regime-changed and now Syria is next. At best, the saftey of Christians are being totally ignored. Middle Eastern Christians are being exterminated and nobody cares.
The word about Russia’s abandonment of its hardline position will bring out 100s of 1000s more. Assad won’t be able to count on his armed forces — his doubling down behind the Russian proposal to the UN was to order troops to shoot protesters dead. So, a week after his denial of responsibility, AGAIN the wrong move.
Thanks Oldeconomybuyer.
I’m not inclined to disagree with you. There are problems along those lines. There’s no doubt about it.
“Peace loving” Islamists, are not quite as peace-loving as some would have you believe.
A New Moon is 12/24
With all of our technology, does the phase of the moon really matter?
To some it may, to others it may not.
