I wouldn’t go as far as to say that Jesus would have loved Hitchens. Hitchens called Mother Theresa a “b-tch”...
Still, I hope Hitchens has rest now and I offer condolences to the family.

I have no cause to believe that Jesus did not love everyone. Can there be a greater love than being willing to die for the salvation of all humanity? Objectively speaking, of course, salvation is conditioned on one’s faith in Christ and His work of atonement. The opinions of mortals as to the character and works of C. Hitchens are, finally, irrelevant.

Jesus loves the very people who condemned Him to death and nailed Him to the cross.
It is beyond our mortal understanding, which is why He's Jesus, and we're not.

Jesus loves CH regardless of what he says about anyone, the same as he loves us regardless of what words we use against anyone. Jesus does however judge perfectly. I only hope that CH, as well as everyone, finds Jesus to be the only way.
