National Review contributing editor and columnist Andrew C. McCarthy says Newt Gingrich is a strong conservative with a significant track record and countered his own publication's editorial criticizing the former House speaker.
In McCarthy's online column posted Saturday, he wrote: "I respectfully dissent from National Review's Wednesday evening editorial."
He writes further that he has been advised that the editorials timing was driven by its inclusion in the last edition of the magazine to be published this year."

National Review for the most part has gone RINO.
But then again, you have Mark Steyn, no establishmentarian, and no Romney supporter, who pens the following article on Gingrich. Well worth a read:
http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/print/286068
“McCarthy recounted some of Gingrich’s spectacular conservative successes:
“Gingrich is the candidate who can say he actually wrestled the federal budget into balance . . . “
In an election about the imperative to repeal Obamacare, Gingrich is the candidate who helped defeat Hillarycare by comparison, Governor Romney ushered in a health-care system that became a model for Obamacare (and he stubbornly continues to insist that it was a great achievement the main reason he cant crack the 25 percent ceiling in most polls).”
“Gingrich is the candidate who reformed welfare which, the Editors acknowledge, is ‘the most successful social policy of recent decades.’
Agreed, but it sounds as if that is not uncontested however.
the author Mark Stein was on Fox this AM.
He was not by any stretch supporting Romney...just exposing some of Newts more liberal failings.
Mark is a regular replacement for Rush...and his article was not a RINO love vest by any stretch.
unfortunately we have to give serious consideration to Newt if the choices turn out to be Newt or Romney.
Apparently the majority of the media has gone rino. Have to read more and more what the candidates actually say, do and propose by researching factual sites and steer clear of the media hype. Romney is the chosen one.
Gee, I remember when the National Review used to bash liberals almost as hard as it now bashes conservatives.
Newt is my man. Have you heard anyone go on Fox News and expose the other candidates to the extent they go after Newt? Fox News has given establishment republicans the green light to go after Gingrich and it is incessant. Imus has openly endorsed Romney and we do know many of Fox News political analysts have also endorsed Romney.
Stein may be the exception as far as establishment goes..did he endorse anyone? who is left? Romney, Bachmann, Perry, Paul and Santorum.
Changed after Buckley died. Sad state of affairs when we have to search long and hard for any true conservative sites.
Damage Control - nothing more, nothing less.
Sadly, this is looking more like an instant replay of 2008 every day. With an eventual billion dollars in his campaign war chest, Obama and the Dems are licking their chops.
Don’t start believing the spew coming from the GOP elite leadership about Newt. They are just circling the wagons around Mitt. I don’t think they are going to pull it off this time around.
You’ve got that right Georgia Girl:)
It has just now occurred to me that Stein is clearing the runway for Bush to land.
Bush is just one more of the republican establishment a$$es that I will NOT support.
GO NEWT GO.....
I guess this means there is an opening, then? American Spectator is still out there, I think they are still pretty conservative.
“the author Mark Stein was on Fox this AM.”
Well, some of us have caught on to the game FNC and some of the others have been playing.
Tell you what, you come clean and tell us all who you support (are you a Romney-Bott or a Paul-insista?) and I'll read the article?
Considering the number of times you have refered to NEGATIVE articles against Newt, it's obvious you want to see him go down so your guy will win.
YOU PEOPLE HAVE VERY SHORT MEMORIES. First it was Palin, then Bachman. After that, it was Perry and finally Cain, that the ESTABLISHMENT GOP and Far Left Loons set out to destroy.
Don't y'all realize that "they" don't want a "Conservative" to run against Dear Leader?
If Newt loses and your choice wins, I GUARANTEE he will be the next target for DESTRUCTION.
Waiting???
Buckley’s son supported Obama in ‘08...then the NEW YORK TIMES SUNDAY MAGAZINE did a glitzy, fawning biography of the kid.
When you play ball with the left...good things can happen.
No one wants Gingrich to lose. But you must keep an open mind. Mark Steyn calls the shots like it is. It’s also called honest evaluation. We can’t act like the proverbial three monkeys. None of us (I am assuming here) are either Romneybots or Gingribots. We don’t want our candidate a la Goldwater going down in flames in the general election. Remember, politics is about perception. Obama with his $1B stash and MSM will rip apart the heavy baggage candidates. Wake up. Get real. If Santorum does not trump the polls and comes on top, then we are stuck with whatever we got. That’s the reality. Romney is unacceptable and Gingrich (for all the reasons Steyn states and says it so well) is unelectable. Electricity from Mars. C’mon! Even Governor Moonbeam didn’t go so far.
