To be honest, I was surprised Pres. Bush didn’t select Forbes to be his Secretary of Commerce. Perhaps the offer was made and declined, but I couldn’t think of a more competent person for that position.

Depends on how you view Forbes as a supervisor of weather forecasters.

Fact is, the vast bulk of the Commerce Department's responsibility is NOAA -- the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It consumes over 60% of Commerce's budget, if I recall correctly.

Second on the list of budget items is the Census Bureau.

Otherwise, the Department of Commerce has very little to do with regulating commerce.

Somehow, I don't think Commerce would be the spot for Forbes...

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression that at least under the current administration, a vast array of fiscal responsibilities were being placed under the authority of the Sec. of Commerce.

I would have loved to see Forbes in a cabinet position more suited to his expertise.
