Best Buy Cancels Christmas Orders, Causes Consumer and Analyst Backlash

With three days to go until Christmas and Hanukkah already underway, Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) assured it won't be on many customers' "nice" lists this season.
On Thursday, the national consumer electronics retailer notified a fraction of its online customers that it would not be able to complete their online orders -- some of which were placed in November -- and could not guarantee they would be able to get their purchased items by the holiday.
The move is a considerable blow to an as-yet-undetermined percentage of the many consumers who moved their holiday shopping online this year. For the tens of thousands of people who spent the Black Friday after Thanksgiving shopping for electronics on their laptops, for example, instead of having to sit in freezing temperatures for hours on end to get the best deals, what might have seemed like a brilliant idea just a month ago might not appear so appealing today.

Best Buy was never big on customer satisfaction. The last time I bought anything major from them was 20 years ago, when I got a PC. The PC developed a problem, so I returned it. The first guy I talked to said BB would not accept a return because it was one day past the return deadline. I asked to speak to a manager. The guy said he WAS a manager, so I said I wanted to talk to whoever he reported to. Finally got an exchange of the defective PC. Never went back after that.
A couple of years ago, not long before Circuit City went under, I was in the market for a television. Both Circuit City and Best Buy gave me the run around, told me the item was in stock when it wasn't, trying to sell me anything but what I wanted, telling me I had to get the extended warranty, and shuttling me off to the line to get one of their credit cards, etc.
I went to Amazon and ordered the TV by accident. No warranty run-around, no credit card run around. I don't even bother to browse Best Buy anymore.

Has anyone seen the awful Best Buy commercials that ridicule Santa?
This is to be expected with Obamanomics. Companies are slashing prices, which slashes profits, which causes them to slash inventory and sales force.
I love those commercials. They’re not ridiculing Santa, they’re saying shopping at BB can make you a better gift giver than Santa. And since Santa mostly gave me socks and underwear I think they’re right (that somehow was the tradition of my family, blame Santa for all the utility presents, fun presents came from family).

I first went into a Best Buy about 5 years ago..Just browsing..doing some research..one of our DVD players was acting up...they were having an “open box” sale of returned items...saw a really nice Magnavox player..for $10..box was opened..but the packing hadn’t been ripped..so I took a flyer....it still works perfectly..
Best Buy’s (aka Worst Buy) extended warranty is a HUGE profit center for them.
Best Buy’s days are numbered because of bad service and a “survive the scam” customer environment. The internet did not kill them.

Yeah, for sure. From everything I have read, WSJ, others, it appears to me that BB is on the same downward spiral as Circuit City. To bad as I like to shop there. Brick and Mortar retailers are in for a tough ride it seems....

Likewise. I've bought a lot of different stuff from Amazon of late (as well as in the past few years) and never have had a problem.
I ordered an Pellet Gun and a book last week and got both within 5 days.

And they wonder why Christmas shoppers ordered $35 billion dollars worth of merchandise online as of last week. We haven’t set foot in a store this year and everything has arrived on time and it excellent condition....much of it shipped free!
Best Buy deserves to meet the fate of Circuit City.
BIGGGG dittos on that! Made our Christmas shopping great. And all the other little bennies that come with it IE: free TV series, videos, etc.
I have Amazon Prime (free two day shipping). Yesterday I remembered I forgot three books I needed as presents, ordered them with next day shipping for only $6 extra and they will be here this morning.

If I were able to do much in-store shopping this year, I would have loaded up the cart, gone to the counter and wished the clerk a cheery MERRY CHRISTMAS!
In any store that forbid its clerks from answering in kind, I would give the stink eye, note that I was Christmas shopping, that I intended to buy Christmas presents, point out the logical disconnect in buying Christmas presents from a store that doesn't celebrate Christmas, turn on my heel and walk away.
Any store that doesn't get the message after having to restock multiple abandoned carts probably doesn't deserve to be in business...
