War scares are running high in Great Britain, while the British Foreign Ministry is trying to cool down tensions with Argentina. At the same time Britain is attempting to demonstrate that it has no intention of abandoning the Falkland Islands claimed by Argentina.

Prime Minister David Cameron, in his broadcast on Saturday, pledged to the Falklanders “We will always maintain our commitment to you on any question of sovereignty …Your right to self-determination is the cornerstone of our policy. We will never negotiate on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands unless you, the Falkland Islanders, so wish. No democracy could ever do otherwise.”

Britain’s claim to the Falklands dates back to the 1600s, but the French where there first.

Argentina occupied the islands from December 1832 to January 1833 while it was unoccupied. The islands were promptly retaken by the British and this short occupation is the basis for Argentina’s claim.

It’ll be more than 4 in less time that it would take an Argentinean vessel loaded with troops to sail the 300 miles to the islands.

Argentina scrapped its amphibious assault ship years ago.

It still flies the same aircraft it had in 1982 (minus the ones in pieces at the bottom of the ocean)

The UK in contrast has upgraded or replaced virtually every single weapon system used in 1982 with the exception of one class of guided missile destroyers (and they are being replaced by state of the art air defence destroyers)

The Argentines lack the ability to defend themselves from the cruise missiles that would arrive at their own shores much less take the Falklands.

Maybe, but remember that the UK started running out of cruise missiles during the recent Libya kinetic whatever-you-call-it.

They would need Obummer to approve a resupply...

All of those older Type 42 destroyers you mention are now replaced by only three Type 45 destroyers - planned for 12 and then cut down to 6 total. When I talked to crew members of HMS Manchester (open to the public in Liverpool last Feb.)they didn't know where they would be assigned to next. Their next trip was to Southampton for decommissioning.
