Rich Chinese couple's 8 babies spark anger (Uproar and possible fine for violating one child policy)

BEIJING — A rich Chinese couple who had eight babies with the help of two surrogate mothers has been forced to move out of their villa following a public uproar and could face a large fine for breaching strict family planning laws mandating only one child.

The couple in the booming southern metropolis of Guangzhou had the children last year, according to state media, but the story only came to light after a picture of the children — four boys and four girls — was used by a photography studio in an advertisement.

The story was first featured in the Guangzhou Daily on Monday. The English-language website China Daily carried a picture of what appeared to be the eight babies, credited to the newspaper, although with part of their faces blurred.

A separate China Daily report quoted a photographer surnamed Li from the photo studio, QQ Baby, in the Tianhe district of Guangzhou.

"The photo shoot was a mess," he said. "Some of the babies were crying, some were sleepy, while the others were crawling around."

Li said that after a whole afternoon's hard work, only a dozen photos had been taken, and just two of those were satisfactory.

The octuplets, four boys and four girls, now have 11 nannies, with eight caring for them, two cleaning the house and one preparing food, the report said.

Reuters said the couple turned to in vitro fertilization after years of trying to have children and spent nearly $157,800 (one million yuan) on the procedure, state television reported.

This should make the average Chinese person angry, but then there is so much they should be angry about.

I’m still 14 months away from my baby girl from China. But I’ll be happy to give a few of these a new (and better) home.

Leave them alone. Isn’t having 8 babies punishment enough.

Merry Christmas and a very PC New Year.

“I’m still 14 months away from my baby girl from China...”

It is a long, hard wait (I know). No matter how much you think you prepare for the referral picture.... be prepared to cry, laugh, jump for joy and fall in love (all at the same time!) Good luck!

Maybe from your perspective, but for people who have lived there all their lives, they've never had it so good.

Say what you will, but this couple has done more to stimulate the Chinese economy and create jobs for Chinese workers than salting their bucks away in Switzerland would have.

Regards,

Are they going to kill the “excess” children?

Bless you! I wish I had adopted from China years ago. They are beautiful children.

Thank you so much. I’ve been waiting since my LID in April 2007. Back then, the estimated wait was 18-24 months. HA!

It was an easy decision, especially knowing what fate awaits most girls and women in China. Besides, we need more strong, conservative chicks in the USA! And that is what she will be. :)

We waited from start to finish two years and five months before the referral picture. That had changed since some in our group had done everything within a 9-12 month timeline. We had to get several documents done over... I am sure you have had to have most documents done again. All I can say is this time period is your LABOR. (that is how I looked at it). Believe me, when you hold that referral picture, all that time of waiting, filing this document, the home study, etc, etc, etc... will all seem trivial and so worth it!!

Believe it or not, all my documents were cleared. Pretty amazing, too. My timeframe from approval to LID was extremely fast in order to get in before the new rule changes in May 2007. My home study began in December and all paperwork was sent to the agency before April 1st. Had to call my congressman to get my docs rushed through in Detroit, but it happened. Thank goodness!

I tell people I've been pregnant for 4 years. They laugh. :)

That was actually very nice of your Congressman to get the documents rushed through in Detroit. We actually had people stop asking about the adoption. They just assumed either we couldn’t, or something had gone wrong since the time was so long. I couldn’t blame them. We were told 12 months from start to finish. We had a very large Christening party for her a few months after she got home. We had to give a little “speech” before dinner and we thanked everyone for being so supportive for so long. I also said that the bible says God knows our name before we were formed in the womb. Our little girl was a rare exception since we all knew her name before she was formed as well. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the place!

My hairdresser is Chinese. She and her husband escaped many years ago. She’s an American citizen with about 5 daughters! All of them have gone on to college and good careers.

Yep, the common Chinese are indeed pissed, but not because this couple disobeyed the law, but because the law/punishment is never equal in front of the rich and the poor.
