Newly released court documents cast doubt on Gingrich version of first divorce

Carrollton, Georgia (CNN) -- Newt Gingrich claims that it was his first wife, not Gingrich himself, who wanted their divorce in 1980, but court documents obtained by CNN appear to show otherwise.

The Republican presidential candidate, now in his third marriage, has been peppered with attacks and questions about his divorce from Jackie Gingrich for the past three decades.

Questions about his past -- and what that past tells voters about his personal behavior -- have re-emerged as he has returned to the political scene 13 years after he resigned as speaker of the House.

A new defense that has arisen as Gingrich entered the presidential race this year is the insistence that she, not he, wanted the divorce.

On the "Answering the attacks" page of his campaign website, Newt.org, which "(Sets) the Record Straight: Newt's Positions on the Issues and His Record," the campaign discusses Gingrich's first divorce.

"It was (Jackie Gingrich) that requested the divorce, not Newt," the campaign website said, referring readers to an online column written by Gingrich's youngest daughter, Jackie Gingrich Cushman, last May.

Cushman, 13 when her parents separated in 1980, was rebutting persistent rumors that her father served divorce papers on her mother the day after cancer surgery. In the column, Cushman writes that papers were never served in the hospital, and that her mother did not actually have cancer.

This could backfire in the Republican Primary but it will be top news along with every other affair, ethics violation, divorce or anything else the media uses to drive down Newts numbers and it will not backfire in the General.

Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.

We are under attack from the enemy within, the very survival of our country is on the line and they are winning, yet there are morons that would want us to be concerned over this kind of crap.

GO NEWT GO.........

Once Clinton was elected and re-elected the MEdia and the American people lost any creds to question a man’s leadership ability because of his personal behavior in his marriage. But for the Natioanal Enquirer, John Edwards might have been the VP of the US.

Who is coping better with life these days- Newt’s ex’s or Monica Lewinsky? Or Larry Sinclair?

I care!

Newt is an unstable man, and evidently has had a terrible influence on his child.

“It was a huge thing when Giuliani ran. Freepers held him to a high standard for failed marriages.”

Actually I don’t remember what a lot of freepers thought about that (Giuliani).......BUT Newt has addressed this issue, asked God for forgiveness and has moved on. If we can not forgive those who realize their error than we need to do some major soul searching.

No one cares, the media pushes who makes the best husband as their means to smear. The candidates should not engage with them.

The court docs show that Mrs. Gingrich did NOT want the divorce.

Newt let his children go hungry and the church had to feed them.

NO THANKS!

I had rather have a POTUS that was faithful to his family rather the smartest man available.

Because using the word “actually” infers she had another serious ailment so Newt will still look bad.

You have to love Journalists, they are more transparent than the Obama Administration but they just don't realize it.

CNN-Obama beating the “We Must nominate ROMNEY!” drum.

Because that, of course, will ensure the Kenyan Muslim’s second term.

It wasn’t the failed marriages that bothered me, it was the treatment of his wife. Same goes for Newtie.

Let's smear EVERY non-Democrat except Willard.

We wouldn't want to say anything bad about him until he has secured the nomination.

Funny how the picture on that article makes it look like Newt is about to get hit head-on by a truck. Finally, some truth in reporting that this is a media drive-by attack.

Have there been any hit pieces on Mitt “The Media’s Candidate” Romney lately?

Sounds like 9 out of 10 reporters predict Romney will win the nomination and Obama will win the general election, exactly the way they want it.

I’m not a Newt fan either. When are we going to get this level of crack reporting on obama?

“When Jackie Gingrich and her daughters moved from their other home in Fairfax, Virginia, back to their house in Carrollton, Georgia, there were “no lights, no heat, no water, no food in the home,” former Gingrich friend and academic colleague Carter said.”

You said “Newt let his children go hungry and the church had to feed them.”...........Um looks like it was the mother who made the choice. Sorry but I do not see this as Newt starving his children.
