The other day the New York Times invited a few contributors to answer the question Is Americas religious freedom under threat? The answer provided by Salam Al-Marayati, head of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), in an essay entitled A Campaign Against Patriotic Muslims, was a resounding yes at least, that is, where his co-religionists are concerned. Among Al-Marayatis assertions: religious freedom for the Muslim American is under threat .Todays anti-Muslim rhetoric is eerily similar to the pre-Nazi rhetoric against Jews .Hate against Muslim children in elementary and secondary schools is on the rise. There is, insisted Al-Marayati, an inquisition mentality toward Americas Muslims.
People who have written books critical of Islam were described by Al-Marayati as Muslim-haters whose work is reminiscent of the pre-Nazi propaganda that regarded Judaism as a threat to Germany. Al-Marayati railed about the controversy over the TLC reality show All-American Muslim, which, he sneered, became a controversy because it did not include a terrorist. America, he claimed, is being misled by those who, refusing to define American Islam by what he called its mainstream, insist rather on viewing it through the lens of extremism. I love my faith and I love my country, maintained Al-Marayati at the end of his piece. The fact that some readers still question which country I am referring to indicates a serious level of distrust toward Muslim Americans.
This isnt the first time Al-Marayati has pleaded for American non-Muslims to reject Muslim-haters and recognize the compatibility of the Koran and the Constitution, Islamic law and Jeffersonian democracy. A couple of years ago he informed readers of the Huffington Post that Islamic law has five goals accepted by all the scholars of Islam: securing and developing rights to life, expression, faith, family and property. Thats similar to the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. The concluding flourish of his Huff Po article was almost identical to that of his Times piece: I am an American. I am a Muslim. I will work for a better future for all Americans and Muslims worldwide.
Then theres the op-ed he published in the Wall Street Journal after the 2009 massacre at Fort Hood. Al-Marayatis goal there was to put as much distance as possible between the killer, Army major Nidal Hasan, and Islam. Hasan, Al-Marayati contended, suffered from a critical fault in understanding the Quran and a deeply flawed understanding of Islam which, he assured his readers, is (what else?) a religion of peace and justice. In short, Al-Marayati constructed an alternate reality in which there is no such thing as jihad and in which America is not engaged in a war with its practitioners.
So who is this spokesman for mainstream Islam this man intent on spreading the good news that American Muslims are (as he put it in the Times) overwhelmingly God-loving and America-loving citizens who thoroughly reject all forms of violence and extremism? Well, he first gained national attention in 1999, when Dick Gephardt, having nominated him as a member of the National Commission on Terrorism, withdrew the nomination after learning that Al-Marayati had, in fact, publicly defended terrorism. (As Daniel Pipes noted shortly thereafter, this was the first time that a prominent Muslim figure in America has been repudiated because of extremist politics.)
A few more facts about Al-Marayati, courtesy of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. Hes described terrorist attacks by Hizballah as legitimate resistance and has told Muslims not to cooperate with FBI agents investigating their fellow believers. Under his leadership, the MPAC has called for the U.S. to remove Hizballah, Hamas, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad from its list of terrorist organizations. In 1996, when a Palestinian shouting Allahu Akbar drove his car into a Jerusalem crowd, killing one and injuring 23, Al-Marayati issued a condemnation not of the terrorist but of the hero who shot him to death on the spot before he could wreak further damage. In 2006, Al-Marayati predicted a storm coming for American Muslims that would be worse than Japanese internment. Where did he make this prediction? At a fundraising dinner for Palestinian Islamic Jihad member Sami Al-Arian.
Apparently the ludicrous equation of Islamic values with those articulated in the Declaration of Independence is standard practice for Al-Marayati. On more than one occasion he has suggested that Patrick Henry, when he said Give me liberty or give me death, was perfectly articulating the spirit of jihad. (This is not a joke.)
It should be clear to any sensate creature what we are dealing with here. And yet, as it turns out, AlMarayati has not only been invited to peddle his slippery wares in places like the Times and Wall Street Journal and Huffington Post but has also, among much else, been welcomed as a panelist on Bill Mahers Politically Correct and interviewed at length, in 2006, on PBSs Frontline (in which, far from being asked a single remotely challenging question, he was spoon-fed inquiries plainly designed to allow him to serve up his usual spin). He was even a guest at the Clinton White House on multiple occasions, and has, in his capacity as head of MPAC, played host to White House staffers, as well as State and Defense department officials, at an iftar (Ramadan fast-breaking).
In short, Al-Marayati is yet another example of the dangerous determination of high-level figures in the mainstream media and government, and in sundry institutions ranging from the police to the military, to distort out of all recognition the harsh realities of jihad and sharia and to reimagine Islam as a benign faith that teach a love of peace and freedom and, of course, to collaborate in this effort with Muslims whose own shady histories testify to the blatant dishonesty of the whole shebang.
And halt. This guy thinks we're stupid.
Somehow putting the word “freedom” in the same sentence as “Muslim” doesn’t quite jibe.
Lying Islamist. Unfortunately for guys like Al-Marayati there are still Americans capable of critical thought.
Religious freedom?
How about this:
“Human sacrifice was a religious practice characteristic of pre-Columbian Aztec civilization, as well as of other mesoamerican civilizations such as the Maya and the Zapotec.”
Don’t tell me that’s a real show. That’s the Islamic terrorist who infiltrated our military by posing as a shrink isn’t it? Then cowardly shot up our troops. And they got the gall to show his disgusting mitts touching our flag?
That one exception resides in accepting and applying a death penalty for anyone unreasonably taking a human life.
Evil lies within actions such as abortions or honor killings.
The ultimate compliment to a photoshop masterpiece.
What an eye opener!! Hated Jews. Not just hated...I mean hated Jews.
This guy new his Islamic apologetics front and back. Didn't take much to get the guy frothing at the mouth.
Ya’d listen to him talk, read his emails in regards to history, Israel, Christianity, Jesus specifically, views on world events and America.
I absolutely loved fact checking this guy. When he'd speak on a particular subject, he was an ace at changing details just so slightly that if you were not on game, it would sound correct.
Scripture for instance. He would change one word in scripture, make something plural/singular, one small verb. The scripture verse would sound like what we've heard many times throughout the years in church or at home.
With a twist. When you check the verse with your bible, you find an intentional deception. I loved listening to this guy. He was a walking propaganda machine for Islam.
The Ottomans were merely fending off the evil Christian crusaders. Islam could do no wrong.
He would get so rapid, we'd make sure he wasn't thicker round the middle that morning for work....it was the joke of the day.
´Seems cowardly for a muslim to wrap himself in that mantle.
I would add forcible rape and treason.
They’re targeting Synagogues in NY from a recent report that I read...like 50% of their targets.
Filthy mucho-crap-in-jeans are so brave. Spit.
Yeah... I’ve only known two Palestinians. One was pretty much like you describe, utterly brainwashed. He was a student. The other was a mechanic, and his attitude was “Those people are crazy. Thank God I got out.” He was a good mechanic, too. Never screwed me over (far as I could tell.)
Christianity= civilization, Islam= barbarism. Its quite a simple equation borne out by any honest study of history.
After 9/11, a lot of “American” Muslims were asked where their allegiance lay - America or Islam. Without batting an eye they unequivocally, and unanimously, responded “Islam!”
Why these “people” are in our country is beyond me. If they aren’t “with us”, then they are “against us” (thank you President Bush!)!
Let the deportations begin abd get them OUT of our country!!!
Its not just the crimes/terror acts as to why they are so despised but also because they are obnoxious as hell. I work alongside them 6 days a week and the only way I can describe Muslims is that they are pigs. In the morning they go to the bathroom and do their “wretching”. What this entails is making hocking sounds like they are trying to bring up flem or about to vomit. They say this is to get out the evil spirits from their body. I tell them “Guess what? It isn’t working.” Then if they have to use the toilet they leave bottles of water all over the urinals and toilets I assume because they do not use toilet paper. And if that isn’t disgusting enough, if they make a #2 they don’t sit on the toilet seat. They stand on it then squat which leaves footprints all over the toilet seats. Then comes the morning prayer to Allah. ALLAHU AKBAR! ALLAHU AKBAR! loud and obnoxious as hell along with other gibberish that makes them sound like they are dying (no such luck though) and this crap goes on alllllllllll day! Then the 20 zillion other rules and rituals they must follow such as no “pictures of disrobed women” or even a suggestion of it such as an ad in a newspaper for a strip club that has just as a womans face on the ad, THAT is offensive to them, just a womans face and therefore the newspaper must be removed.
Depends on what your definition of (liberty, freedom, justice) is...
Muslims always refine the basic words into Orwellian new-speak. Women have the "freedom to be covered head to toe" and it is totally "their choice" whether to do it or be beaten.
Killing and raping non-Muslims is the "ultimate justice".
There is simply no reason to engage these liars in conversation.
