US Sends Aircraft Carrier Into The Strait Of Hormuz, As Iran Beats Its Chest

USS John C. Stennis

Iran has announced it located a U.S. aircraft carrier moving into the Strait of Hormuz during Iranian wargame exercises.

The AFP reports Commodore Mahmoud Mousavi, spokesman for the exercises, says the carrier was spotted by an Iranian reconnaissance plane that took photos and video.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Fifth Fleet confirmed the carrier is the USS John C. Stennis, a nearly 1,100 foot nuclear powered craft with unlimited range and 3 million gallons of onboard fuel for its aircraft.

USS Mobile Bay

In addition to its planes and the ships that sail in the group, the Stennis is armed with NATO RIM-7 Sea Sparrow and Rolling Air Missile (RAM) surface-to-air missile systems, the Phalanx Close-in Weapons System for cruise missile defense, and the AN/SLQ-32 Electronic Warfare System.

U.S. officials said Wednesday that the Stennis and the guided missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay slipped into the strait Tuesday after a stop at Dubai's Jebel Ali port.

The USS Mobile bay is a 570 foot Ticonderoga class cruiser that carries the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile, two Seahawk LAMPS multi-purpose helicopters, and is used for anti-submarine warfare, anti-air, and anti-surface warfare.

The Associated Press reports Iran is playing up the sighting of the carrier and boasting of the strength of its navy in the region.

Iranian naval chief Adm. Habibollah Sayyari says Iran has "control over the moves by foreign forces" and that the "foreign fleet will be warned by Iranian forces if it enters the area of the drill."

Iranian state TV showed the supposed video but details of the carrier couldn't be made

I wouldn't have much of a problem with it, given the right circumstances, but I don't think of the action as being courageous.

You started the dialog by axing who would be more likely to do it, a "spineless wimp or a thoughtful conservative".

A cheap shot and now you are looking for a graceful way out.

Just admit you were wrong with your hobsons choice, and move on.

“None of this would be necessary if we had been drilling for our own oil on our own land.”

None of this would be necessary if we had turned Iran into a parking lot a few decades ago. If it was good enough for Japan, it’s good enough for Iran, N. Korea, etc. We just don’t deal with our enemies any more; we’re too PC.

I know nothing about military maneuvers and have nothing but respect for the skill of the US military. From reading the posts here what I’m gathering is that the US is moving assets to the open water so that if there is trouble with Iran acting against either us or Israel, we will be in prime position to blow them to bits.

Am I understanding correctly?

Also, how likely is the doo-doo to hit the fan while Obama and his family are in Hawaii? How imminently critical is all this? Earlier reports had said that Israel was talking about hitting Iran before the new year, but I think that might have been based on when the US troops were going to leave Iraq, and they’re already out. Although the chief objective of the timing would be to pre-empt Iranian action in Iraq (which Iran hasn’t done yet although Iran has already said their military is eyeballing Iraq - supposedly cooperatively).

BAsically I’m asking, as a know-nothing observer, whether it’s time to expect the SHTF scenario in the next week or two.

Here's a thought. What if Iran makes a move in the Persian Gulf, simultaneous with China going for Taiwan, and North Korea's boy king [theirs, not ours! :-) ] launching a nuclear-tipped missle for an EMP attack on Hawaii while the Bamster is there (looking to knock out the command-and-control *communications*)...

With that scenario, here's my question.

Will Michelle go back for seconds at the luxury restaurant?

Cheers!

There are a lot of MINOs (Muslim in name only) in Persia as well as followers of other religions. A nuke cannot tell the difference.

One thing a sane President could do would be to recognize the heir to the Pahlsvi dynasty as the legitimate government of Persia. Unfortunately, BHO is too much like JEC to do that.

Yeah,,you really don’t want to move a ship that size into the straits or the gulf...contrary to popular belief, as well-protected as they are, those aircraft carriers can off like a roman candle—just look at the forrestal and enterprises fires in the late 1960s....and those were five inch rockets...

lol

My suspicion is that Iran would do an EMP attack on the mainland US as a “begin operations” signal to Hamas and Hezbollah operatives who have been coming in through our soft underbelly (while the DOJ gags and binds Sheriff Joe from trying to protect our underside). I know Bam was working on having authorization to supplement the whole martial law thing with detaining and sending to Gitmo anybody he wants to make trumped-up “suspicions” about.

If the timing is just right this could all happen when Obama and his family are all in HI where it’s easy to keep invaders at bay. Is Pelosi still there too? It would conveniently happen before Sheriff Joe’s posse comes out with the truth about Obama being a fraud enabled by an entire criminal system, yet far enough away from the expected release of the report, that only the “conspiracy theorists” would suspect a connection.

I do realize I have a vivid imagination so I guess I’m looking for the sound-minded military folks here to tell me it ain’t gonna happen. lol

You want to really know how drive up the price of oil? take one of those huge supertankers and just sink it right in the middle of straits...

I agree with you.
Send a CG, couple of DDGs and some subs, with a good CAP. CVNs are for standoff work. Maybe a minesweeper, if we have one.
For sure, they should not let a CVN within ASM range of the Iranian coast. The Iranians are crazy enough to try saturating the defense of CVBG.
Then there are some Kilos and some mini-subs.
And mines are even more dangerous that missiles and torps in restricted waters. They can be deployed from freigters as well as military vessels. The straights could be turned into a death trap.

Praying Mantis was not the only event that took place in the Persian Gulf during the 1980s. You've apparently forgotten about Earnest Will and Nimble Archer not to mention all the deployments into the gulf when offensive operations did not occur. In addition MEUs deployed to the Gulf as did the French Carrier Clemenceau during the Tanker War. American carriers operated in the Persian Gulf long before Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Don’t underestimate Obama.

IMHO, he very well would pull the trigger.

The only problem is that he would have left all his ammo in the rear and emptied the clip and chambers before he began pulling the trigger.

But I have no doubt he would not only pull the trigger, but would make a scene so everybody saw him doing it.

Now that the US does have that energy policy, however, there is nothing for it but to send a carrier group to the straight of Hormuz. My nephew goes into the IDF in May. The son of a good friend of mine is already done with Basic Training. I see them all the time, everywhere. Pimply-faced, fuzzy cheeked kids in uniform. It’s coming. May G-d watch over them. I’d rather middle-aged old farts like me go to war instead, but that’s not how it works.

IMHO, even if somebody had the guts to use them, the present POTUS would likely take active actions to prevent their use or even their operational deployment.

In his thinking, Islam is just another religion per Masonic traditions.

If he did oppose Iran, it would only be because he perceives his personal religion to be more righteous than Iran and he wants them removed from any chance of challenging or hindering his own power machinations.

It is more likely he would give up an entire Carrier Task Force for complete enemy seizure to bolster an American adversary’s status than to defend or promote American interests.

He wants them to worship him more than he wants to represent the US.

During Operation Preying Mantis, the Navy kept its CV in the Arabian Sea and sent its DDGs into the Gulf to do battle. I cannot believe th Iranian military doesn’t remember what a FUBAR they experienced at the hands of the USN.

Sure would be nice to have the Wisconsin and the Iowa handy for times like this.

Too bad they downgraded and substantially disarmed so many of the Perry-class FFG's.
