Team Obama lays out electoral map strategy
LA Times ^ | December 29, 2011 | Peter Nicholas

The mood in camp Obama is picking up these days, with the president’s poll numbers inching northward and Republicans mired in what could turn out to be a prolonged, expensive battle for the GOP nomination.

When Obama campaign officials look at a map of the U.S., they see any number of viable routes toward the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the presidency.

In a fundraising pitch Thursday, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina laid out five potential pathways to the magic number.

The Obama campaign likes to start with the states that John Kerry won in the 2004 election, on the theory that these rock-solid blue states are a lock for the Democratic nominee. Building on the 251 electoral votes that Kerry received, the Obama campaign believes that it can win a second term if any of the following strategies pans out.

The West. The Obama campaign says that one way to get over the top is to win Colorado and Nevada, states that Obama carried in 2008. “We believe if we register more voters, start putting teams in place that can start talking to voters...’’

--snip--

Beyond. No one in Obama’s campaign leadership expects him to have an easier time of it in 2012 than in ’08. Unemployment is high, Congress is gridlocked and voters are disillusioned with Washington. Still, anything can happen in an election year, and the Obama campaign hopes to pick up certain states that went Republican in ’08. The most promising is Arizona, Messina said. Arizona is the home state of the 2008 Republican nominee, John McCain, so Obama didn't compete there last time. In this election, though, Arizona may be in play. “There are hundreds of thousands of eligible voters who are unregistered in Arizona,’’ Messina said. “We’re excited about our opportunities there.’’...

AZ is a head fake. After Fast & Furious and the Justice Dept. taking AZ to court about its new state law against illegal aliens, it doesn't make sense.

I wonder if there’s a way to get on one of those teams and then to start sabotaging it.

WH staff has old poll data. Latest Gallup show Obama at 41 approve and 50 against. Never rely on poll data on Xmas holiday because people tend to be in a good mood. Best data is in Jan 2012 and afterwards.

Bammy Boy will die die die in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Colorado meaning he will lose. The only wild card is that Hillary will be the 2012 VP selection with idiot Biden going to State. This has been rumored. This would help the Dems win

What they are doing is driving white voters away from them in droves. Suing states that want to protect it’s citizens just can’t be a good re-election strategy. People are fed up with Holder and BO acting like dictators. People are fed up with the hypocrit that is Micelle Obama.

He’s very likely to lose North Carolina, Virginia, and Indiana.

It’ll come down to Ohio and Florida.

Obama can still win without those two states but he’d have to sweep the rest of the swing states. And that’s not likely if he’s lost those two.

I have a real problem with this early voting and write in. It just makes for calculated cheating.

I hope that Bobo believes this, because he won't get out of the starting gate with this strategy. NH and MI (yes, MI) go GOP this time. Surprisingly, that's a 21 EV swing -- one that they can't recover from.

Obama will win 15 states and D.C. Here’s the list: Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Illinois, Washington, Oregon, California, New Mexico, and Hawaii. That won’t win the electoral college.

I think you are right. As regards Virginia, there are a lot of liberals in northern Virginia but not enough to swing that state to O again.

If I ran the republican campaign, I would go hard at NJ. A lot of people who were let go worked in NYC. With Christie as a front man, and gong hard after the fraud, I think a republcan can win there.

Maine, like Nebraska, splits it’s Electoral College votes according to Congressional districts.

Maine has four Electoral College votes.

Granted, Maine has only two Congressional districts.
If Obama wins southern Maine, and the GOP nominee wins northern Maine, they each get one Electoral College vote.
Whoever wins the statewide vote is awarded the other two Electoral College votes.

Las Vegas, meanwhile, is the epicenter of the foreclosure crisis, with an unemployment rate of over 13%. Then Obama encouraged Americans not to go to Las Vegas, which enraged the local mover and shakers in Nevada. I’d be stunned if Obama was able to win Nevada.
