Margaret Thatcher's early life as a grocer's daughter was a far cry from the sometimes lavish surroundings she later found herself in as Britain's first female prime minister.
And it seems her relatively modest upbringing stayed with her after she entered No 10.
Government papers from 1979, made public for the first time by the National Archives, suggest she kept a very close eye on the costs of furnishing her official residence.
The documents reveal how the "Iron Lady" insisted on paying for her own ironing board and dictated that spending on her official residence at No 10 should be as "economical as possible".
In a document detailing costs, including £464 for replacing linen and pillows and £209 for replacing crockery, one official writes in a handwritten note: "I find these figures impossible to believe."
Mrs Thatcher voices her agreement, writing "So do I!".
The former prime minister queries the cost of the bedding by writing a note saying: "We use only one bedroom". And the £19 cost of an ironing board prompts her to scribble: "I will pay for the ironing board."

It’s nice to see that real conservatives existed in recent history. Elected royalty disgust me.
Indeed. And it was done, it seems, out of simple conviction and belief, rather than an urge to spin one’s supposed and much-vaunted ‘principles’ out through the media for electoral effect.
No publicity: it just emerges through archive release 20+ years after the Lady (and I use the capital quite deliberately) has left office.
It’s not his money, it’s appropriate triibute from the serfs.
I don’t know about that. From some of the reviews by the liberal media I’ve read so far, they complain that it treats Lady Thatcher too kindly. That and Streep’s amazing acting ability (American yutz or not) is enough to make me want to go see it.
Someone in government who walks the walk, to quote my late, and missed, father, is as scarce as hen’s teeth.
I’ve always found Meryl Streep to be one dimensional. To borrow from Dorothy Parker, her emotions ran the gamut from A to B.
Thank you for posting the link. That looks good. I usually can’t stand to see Meryl on screen, or off, but I think she’s nailed this one.
Its a sense of personal responsibility and self-sufficiency. If you want something, you buy it. You don’t demand lavish things. Or if you want the occasional luxury, you pay for it yourself. I think a lot of conservatives think this way. I know I am not comfortable taking lavish things on someone else’s dime. If I go out to eat for business, a lot of times I eat at a deli if I’m eating alone. Only when I entertain clients do I go to nice places. I don’t take things from work like pens or paper. I have an 8 year old car but it is fine so I’m not buying a new one. I hate buying for the sake of buying. And I’m not saying this to suggest I’m some moral example. Its just the way I was brought up. If you want something, buy it. Don’t try to scam the system to get free stuff. So Thatcher’s “frugality” here makes perfect sense.
I disagree. What makes Streep, IMO and exceptional actor is that she doesn’t over act when the role doesn’t require it. There is the subtly in her acting that makes it so good. Not that she is not capable of playing over the top characters, but even when she does, like in the character in the Devil Wears Prada, there is a subtle underlying depth that very few actors today can carry off so well.
I may not like her politics but I can respect her craft.
And consider the possibility that there were no more dates might have had more to do with your performance that Streep’s. Your date might well remember the popcorn as the highlight of the evening.
Just saying.
I suspect this is viral promotion for the upcomming movie.
since streep is in it, I predict another self absorbed piece of poop.
I’m glad that she perhaps eventually found a more compatible soul mate. She may well look back on your date as the one that woke her up to meaningless one night stands with guys who have no other interest than in getting laid. Again she probably remembers the movie and the popcorn as the best part of the evening.
Again, this says a lot more about your character than it does about Streep’s ability as a character actress.
