I’m not saying they should not, but I don’t understand why, if they are doing this and will continue to do this whether or not the pipeline is built and we are already exporting more than we import, we are blaming Obama. Surely there are more deserved things he can be blamed for.
We are only exporting more gasoline than we are importing. Both quantities, however, are negligible. And, as previously noted, most of our exports of finished product are to Mexico -- in exchange for a quantity of crude. Note also that fuel supplied to ships and planes bound for overseas destinations in American harbors and airports is counted as exports (while fuel burned to get here is not counted as an import).
More importantly, though, we are still importing about 2/3 of our total crude requirements. And 800,000 bpd of crude from Canada is 800,000 bpd we don't have to import from the unstable Middle East. And 800,000 bpd that China will have to buy from the unstable Middle East, rather than from Canada.
