PASADENA, Calif. (Dec. 27, 2011) The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade is widely known as "America's New Year Celebration." So there is naturally some confusion every few years when the Rose Parade is scheduled not on January 1st, but on January 2nd. The tradition dates back to 1893 and it all started because of ... the horses.
Pasadena Tournament of Roses Marching.com received a question this week about why this year's parade is a day later than usual, so we asked the Tournament of Roses for more information. Here's a look at the history and origins of the tradition.
Never on Sunday
More than a century-old, the Tournament of Roses is a tradition full of traditions, and part of that tradition means never holding the New Year festivities on a Sunday. In 1893, the first time New Year's Day fell on a Sunday for Tournament organizers, the "Never on Sunday" policy came into being. That year, officials decided to move Tournament of Roses events to January 2nd in order to avoid frightening horses tethered outside local churches and thus interfering with worship services.

Happy New Year to all.
Me too. Thought it was too avoid scheduling conflicts with the NFL, who do hold NFL games on Jan 1, which I thought was why all major college football games were moved off Sundays.
But the people in church are sleeping anyway- just wake `em up!
Very interesting.
You know what they always say on Law & Order: follow the money.
This hiccup about Sunday HAS to have something to do with "filthy lucre." (Thankew Dr. EEEeeugene Scott.)
I’m old enough to know this was why the Rose Bowl parade and game are never played on Sunday. Keep in mind that the NFL was not nearly as popular as it is now.
If Oregon wins tomorrow, it will be the Ducks’ first Rose Bowl victory. Although Oregon won the 1917 Tournament of Roses game, it was played at Tournament Park across the street from the California Institute of Technology. The Ducks played there again in 1920 but lost to Harvard, and they have had three losses in the Rose Bowl, which has been the site of the game since 1923.
So is it tradition that the Rose Bowl also is not played on Sunday?
How long before someone is willing to call out the OWS punks as the culprits in the LA car arsons?
How low will their disruption of the Rose Parade be?
That explains why I could not find it in the channel line up for today.

College Football Games, including Bowl Games,
are rarely played on Sunday,
by long tradition, there have been exceptions
Yes, for as long as I can remember and I’m 58 years old. Back then, they really did not want to interfere with Church services; because back then, football would have lost out to church.
