EL PASO, Texas -- A man is recovering in a hospital from a gunshot wound he received during an alleged attempted robbery at an auto salvage yard Thursday night.

El Paso Police Department officials told ABC-7 they believe the man was one of several trying to rob a man who works at the A&M Salvage Yard in the 9700 block of Alameda.

Police said an employee was within the security gate of the yard when he said he was approached by several men who then tried to rob him about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The employee pulled out a gun and fired one shot, hitting one of the men. Police did not elaborate on the man's wounds, but said they are not life-threatening. He is being treated at an area hospital.

The others fled, prompting police to launch a search. Investigators used dogs and even a helicopter to scour the property and surrounding fields. At last check, no one has been arrested.

Police spokesman Detective Mike Baranyay said the employee told them he shot the weapon in self-defense.

"If you feel threatened, you have a right to defend yourself," Baranyay said. "And obviously, if there's multiple subjects on one individual, that allows you to use a little more force to defend yourself."

A man is recovering in a hospital...

Well, there is a downside to an otherwise happy story to start the new year. I'd prefer that the thug be graveyard dead, of course.

Funny, absolutely no reason to think they were - must be those fumes from too much celebrating for the New Year.

“And obviously, if there’s multiple subjects on one individual, that allows you to use a little more force to defend yourself.”

In El Paso, it’s not necessary to state whether they were illegal or not. It’s pretty much certain that they were. I think that’s all there are in El Paso.

Funny, ALL the reason to believe they were.

But you being from New York wouldn't understand the ILLEGAL alien problem we have in Texas.

Personally, I like to have at least some shred of evidence before I draw a conclusion; too bad you don’t. I would be neither surprised nor unsurprised if they turned out to be illegals, because I don’t have any political capital invested in them having to be illegals, or not. You ought to have learned at some point that blind, mindless hatred is no substitute for thought. No doubt, you also believe 9/11 was an inside job, the Apollo missions were all staged on a movie set somewhere in California, and the Earth is really flat.

That's quite a leap, from my educated guess that a band of robbers in El Freaking Paso, Texas are probably illegal Mexican aliens, to "blind hatred". I suppose you would need "evidence" before guessing that a suicide bomber in the Middle East is Islamic?

Whew... I do, however, maintain that the 19th Amendment destroyed America. ..No offense.
