Mount Rainier shooting opens door for agenda pandering

Four people shot in Skyway and hours later, the same “person of interest” is allegedly involved in the slaying of a Mount Rainier National Park ranger, and in the aftermath, a debate is erupting over a 2010 law that allowed private citizens to carry loaded firearms in national parks in accordance with the laws of the state in which the park is located.

Congress lifted a ban on carrying loaded guns in national parks in February 2010 amid warnings by critics that the action would lead to gun violence and poaching.—Seattle Times

KING 5 morning anchor Joyce Taylor also tried to make a connection between this case and the City of Seattle’s court battle to overturn Washington State’s preemption law, allowing the city to ban firearms in city park facilities. She continued mentioning the Seattle case as the news switched over to KONG later in the morning.

The Parks belong to The People. They do NOT belong to the government.

And I have an absolute right to protect myself at all times. And it doesn't mean blowing a whistle and waiting for a ranger to show up.

So the logic would be that killers will seek out parks for their kills and there will be no more killing in our cities.

Idiots!!

This case sounds like a reason *to* carry firearms in national parks.

We're all aghast when someone gets murdered....but not so much when a baby in the womb gets murdered.

Maybe take knives away from doctors.

I know that area. I was up in Paradise, about halfway up the mountain, in May and there was 10 feet of snow up there. The parking lot to the ranger station was cleared, but that is it. There was a wall of snow all around the facilty. My point? Where the heck could the shooter have gone?

There is NO legitimate hunting or self defense reason for a civilian to own the kind of guns he had in that photo, all the more so for a mentally and emotionally unstable person with PTSD.

Except to help promote a government by the people free of tyranny and self defense.

Don't let that aged piece of paper toting the God given right of the 2nd amendment get in the way.

Barnes is reportedly an Iraq war veteran, with possible PTSD issues.

I'll bet he is being treated with SSRIs

Yeah... I’m SURE the perp would have stopped at the edge of the forest and turned around if the law was still in place!

What kind of fool actually TRULY believes that a law against guns would stop ANYONE intent on causing harm to another individual? If they don’t care about the prison term or possible death sentence for murder what would tacking on a couple years for an “illegal” firearm possibly do to deter them???

As for those who believe that people will stop killing if they don’t have guns - look at Britain. Take away one tool and they’ll just find another (a bat, a knife, a pen - heck ANYTHING could be used as a weapon if you knew what you were doing - or even if you didn’t and were persistent).

The kinds of people who perpetrate crimes like this don’t CARE about anyone or anything. I can’t help but laugh when people seriously suggest that a ban on guns would stop these monsters. I would keep laughing if only there weren’t politicians who bought into this on PURPOSE in order to secure more power over the people.

Here we go again, a lot of our returning troops who have been in Iraq and Afghanistan have visited the VA for help for PTSD. That does not mean they all should be forbidden to have firearms. The present laws are strict enough and only those who a court have judged mentally unable to care for themselves or who are presently admitted into a locked mental health facility are barred from having firearms. Half the USA is on some sort of anti-depressant and we shouldn’t use a dx only to restrict access to firearms.

As far as the type of weapons, his guns look scary but are only semi auto versions of military style firearms. A lot of .22 clones of AR rifles are sold, but they are no more dangerous than a Ruger 10/22. It’s the shooter not the gun who is responsible for where a bullet goes and what harm is may do.

Snipped from above story...looks like he is trying to avoid the deep snow...or maybe he is in a snow cave...:

Searchers flew over the park Sunday night in a plane with infrared equipment that picks up signs of body heat.

Meanwhile, a tactical team was trying to track the assailant through nearly 2 feet of fresh snow as temperatures fell. More than 100 law-enforcement officers from the National Park Service, FBI, Pierce County and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife were on the scene.

“We believe we have a good track on him,” Troyer said. “But he’s way out ahead of us.”

The gunman’s tracks went into creeks and other waterways, making it more difficult for crews to follow. “He’s intentionally trying to get out of the snow,” Troyer said.

Possibly. Husband and I talked about this...he thinks they’re why vets are killing themselves. He was on SSRIs after getting wounded severely and it was bad...he was suicidal. He’s not taking any now. He’s managing his PTSD with keeping busy, going to AA meetings, therapy, and he will be getting a service dog to assist with his PTSD and TBI. It’s easier to give them pills.

Is there no thread about anything that does not inspire you--and others--to bring up the subject of abortion? Tiresome.

In 2008 on my first trip to Big Bend as an adult I saw the “No Loaded Guns Allowed” sign near the entrance. I pulled my Harley over and unloaded my .45 and the .32 in my boot. A quarter of a mile later I saw a sign that said “Danger: Bear and Mountain Lion Country”. I pulled over again and re-loaded.

Only speculation on my part but if I were on the run I would realize that there are few east-west routes for get~away purposes in this state and those few would likely be closely watched. White Pass and Chinook Pass (when they’re open) offer less obvious passage to eastern Washington and oblivion.

Other than that, unless he had family/friends in the area it seems like a dead-end....unless he believes he’s living in a Rambo movie.

After "Columbine" in 1999 I began to track
the link to SSRIs in mass murderers.

A number of year ago I found the website:
SSRI Index

The link is astounding !

Now wait just a minute... Blaming the SSRIs is as bad as blaming the guns.

SSRI’s, like any other medicine, need to be properly prescribed and administered by a competent physician. This means ensuring that the patient does not have an adverse reaction, etc.

Millions of people enjoy a better life because of SSRI’s. The same with painkillers and even narcotics. Any of them have very serious consequences if taken for the wrong reasons or not monitored for adverse actions. So they’ve absolutely got to be closely monitored between doctor and patient, LIKE ALL DRUGS prescribed for treatment.

Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater!
