2012 Iowa Caucus Live Thread
Iowa GOP ^ | 1.3.12 | Free Vulcan

Posted on 01/03/2012 8:08:24 AM PST by Free Vulcan

Live thread to cover today's GOP caucus. News, predictions, opinions, totals, and the like.

Will be heading out about 4 pm or so to get our site ready and do a final review with the precinct chairs. I expect it to be bigger than 2008 with very heavy turnout and we are preparing for that.

We are also ready for disruptions. They simply won't be tolerated. The state party sent us a memo saying if there's any trouble call the cops immediately. Anyone trying to cause problems is going to get a rude awakening.

My predictions of the outcome are a narrow field with about a 10 point spread for the top five with Bachmann far behind in single digits:

Santorum - 24 Romney - 22 Paul - 20 Perry - 17 Gingrich - 14 Bachmann - 4 The Rest - 1

Think things are still in flux and many won't decide till right to the wire, so I'm not terribly confident of any predictions.

They are retabulating. They’ll be a bit of back and forth for awhile.

Usually it doesn’t matter, but this being so close, it does.

Right!

I said it above: it’s like a Jimmy Stewart movie!

I don’t care if Santorum loses to Romney by 199 votes,
HE WON ... AGAINST ALL ODDS, MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND THE HUGE ROMNEY MACHINE and BELTWAY ESTABLISHMENT! Sweet victory .. a great omen!

Fox is all messed up. They have Clayton County now back down to 79%, when it was at 100% for a long time.

What the heck is going on??

Thune beat Daschle. Barely.

Johnson beat Thune (congressional IIRC) in 2002.

South Dakota is always a close call anymore.

CNN says South Carolina is the most conservative of states and it will get better for Romney beyond there, which is true for the north and the Left coast. Someone needs to take South Carolina and Florida to match Romney going north.

fundraising is between 300% and 400% higher on a daily basis than it was just ten days ago.

That's nothing as the basis for the change was so small. Now that he is a front runner, his fund raising must increase by orders of magnitude. If conservatives are not all talk, it will.

Santorum is the winner tonight no matter what, if he actually wins the vote, that’s just gravy.

Was a beautiful night....I will sleep well.

My own suspicion was she was stalking for Romney VP. Who knows, but I can’t imagine the sense of staying in.

I don’t think it’s wimping out if Perry decides there is no way for him to win the nomination, as it appears. It’s realistic, and that’s what Iowa and then New Hampshire do, winnow out the candidates.

I admired what Perry said tonight. He’s not deluding himself, like someone whose name shan’t be mentioned - but you know who she is ;)

If Perry goes into SC, it will seal the nomination for Romney and I really, really don’t like that idea. Perry knows that and I don’t think he likes it much, either. If he does withdraw, whether he would throw his support to Newt or Santorum remains to be seen. He may wait till after NH, see how Newt’s counter to the Romney advertising works (regardless of the outcome in NH, which isn’t really the objective).

Depends on the candidate.

Cain was destroying Romney everywhere except in the NE.

IF the Cain voters all come over to Santorum, who’s already got a base in PA, all rust belt states bets are off.

Romney has been really weak pretty much everywhere except for the NE, and that’s not changed today.

He doesn’t need the NE, but he does need the South and the rust belt states to get behind him. This race is really going to be in flux.

Why can’t Santorum do well up north against Mitt?

" Love it! Romney’s gazzillions against shoestring budget Santorum.....pick up truck and all! This is what great stories are made of! "

Imagine being a fly on the wall listening to Romney yelling at some of his campaign leaders after the embarrassing defeat to Rick Santorum by spending all those millions compared to Rick's shoe sting budget.
Rick Sanorum is Mr. Smith goes to Washington.

Someone on CNN said Santorum’s speech tonight was the best he’d heard this season. As he was giving it (with minimal notes, for which he apologized) Mitt’s team was tearing down his ‘prompter. Which forced Mitt to give the same stump speech the CNN guy had heard earlier that day! They didn’t dare give a special speech using a teleprompter after what Rick gave without one!

1 precinct now. Santorum by 4 votes. Even when it was 2 precincts we were talking about well less than 100 votes

Herman Cain got 58 votes I heard and Buddy Roemer got votes (or at least 1 vote) in 1 county.

It doesn’t matter that much whether RS takes first by 10 votes or not but it would be nice.
