“Ive never been in the Navy, but from what I understand from those who have its been a long standing tradition for this sort of thing among the male crewmembers going on below decks ever since sail was spread or keel was hauled.
They are, however, typically a lot more discrete about it.”
Was that why Peter Simple and Lt. O’Brian were such good friends?
In a long drawn out engagement that might be of use. In a naval and aerial attack that’s over and done with before the news knows what’s going on, I don’t see it doing much good.
As a cursory survey of history will show, wars are unpredictable affairs. Whether the powers that be intend it to be a there-and-back-again strike is a moot point, though you’re right that if it turns out to be so, the Chicoms will be glad they didn’t involve themselves openly.
They are REALLY expensive guns to fire. Sadly, the cost of upgrading the fire control systems and associated turret loading systems was deemed prohibitive.
Still, there’s something to be said for the ability to smash the ever-lovin-piss out of your enemy while sitting safely over the horizon.
Say hello to my leetle friend!
