Santorum Targets Blacks in Entitlement Reform (60 Minutes Left Wing Hatchet Job)
60 Minutes ^ | January 2, 2012 | Lucy Madison

At a campaign stop in Sioux City, Iowa on Sunday, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum singled out blacks as being recipients of assistance through federal benefit programs, telling a mostly-white audience he doesn't want to "make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money."

Answering a question about foreign influence on the U.S. economy, the former Pennsylvania senator went on to discuss the American entitlement system - which he argued is being used to politically exploit its beneficiaries.

"It just keeps expanding - I was in Indianola a few months ago and I was talking to someone who works in the department of public welfare here, and she told me that the state of Iowa is going to get fined if they don't sign up more people under the Medicaid program," Santorum said. "They're just pushing harder and harder to get more and more of you dependent upon them so they can get your vote. That's what the bottom line is."

He added: "I don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money."

"Right," responded one audience member, as another woman can be seen nodding.

"And provide for themselves and their families," Santorum added, to applause. "The best way to do that is to get the manufacturing sector of the economy rolling again."

It is unclear why Santorum pinpointed blacks specifically as recipients of federal aid. The original questioner asked "how do we get off this crazy train? We've got so much foreign influence in this country now," adding "where do we go from here?"

CBS News found that of the people on food stamps in Iowa, only nine percent are black and 84 percent are white.

Typically misleading, disingenuous statement emanating from CBS, MSM leftwing mouthpiece in that it doesn't take into consideration blacks as a percentage of Iowa's population on the whole. I don't what percentage of Iowa's population is black, but would not be surprised to learn it was greater than the 9% of Iowa food stamp recipients who are black, making the statement, story by 60 Minutes more hatchet job than anything else.

"he doesn't want to "make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money."

That is EXACTLY what is happening, and what keeps 'em on The Plantation, for 4 generations. Handouts of other-people's-money, wealth-redistribution, Reparations, or whatever you want to call it, this is what we have today.

To be called "racist" for not supporting the handouts to buy votes that Progressives use is a badge of honor, for telling it like it is, IMHO.

Go to Wolfram Alpha and type in "population Iowa percentage black" and you'll find out it's about 2.7%

Blacks make up less than 1% of the population in my township so its a pretty fair bet that the vast majority of food stamp recipients here are white.

I hope Santorum wins based on nothing more than his comment; it is a message that needs to be broadcast.

Blacks are just 12% of the population, yet consume 44% of Wealth transfer handouts.

Captain Obvious would say “Houston, We have a problem here!”, but for being called a racist.

But it still has nothing to do with race, and there was no reason for Santorum to single out the blacks.

Even if the CBS numbers are bogus, there are still whites on welfare in greater numbers.

I haven’t seen the video, but wasn’t this allegation debunked earlier today? I thought I read that he did not say the word “black”. Am I wrong about that?

"The racial make up of the state is 91.0% White (non-Hispanic), 3.8% Hispanic, 2.5% Black or African American, 1.6% Asian, and 0.4% American Indian. One percent of respondents report two or more races."

That's from Wikipedia, directly.

Doesn't this mean that blacks are 4x more likely than whites in Iowa to be on food stamps? How about welfare racial composition? How about crime statistics and drug usage? Convieniently, those statistics about blacks is ALWAYS left out, except when they disparity is used to claim "racism", because of the large BLACK prison population!

Izzy Dunne, thanks very much for the data. :-)

Typical Media BS.

It's a fact that Blacks are represented in the welfare and public assistance rolls way out of proportion to their percentage of the population and many of them are third and fourth generation professional welfare recipients. FWIW, giving money to Blacks has not made their lives better - it's made their lives worse, much worse in many cases.

Santorum is doing the right thing by trying to create an environment where Blacks can break the cycle of welfare dependency by getting a job and providing a life for themselves instead of being de facto slaves on the Democrat welfare plantation.

I don't see how this is going to have any effect on Santorum's electability as President. I don't think ANY GOP nominee is going to get more than 1% of the Black vote regardless. It does highlight a Democrat/Media strategy of trying to stir up Black voter turnout using, "they are going to take away your monthly government check" as motivation.

I believe it was. So we see the war on Santorum begin. From what I read, someone heard “black” in their mind without the actual sound waves hitting their ears.

That’s very true, but I don’t think he said “black people,” because the audio is very unclear at that point and it seems as if he could have started to say one thing and then decided to say something else. I’m not sure how they got “black people” out of it.

And I don’t even like Santorum because I think he’s a bit of a sanctimonious prig and has no new ideas. But they’re trying to get him for something he didn’t do (even though he would have been absolutely correct - welfare does not improve the lives of blacks).

OK granted Rick Santorum should have kept his comments race blind. Per capita, black people do have more poverty problems today. Much of this is due to their believing racist poverty hustlers, no chump change people their own selves, who want black people to keep wallowing in the Democrat-created miseries of the past, and then to blame Republicans for it.

This makes me like Santorum even more. He stands up for principles and the MSM hate him. The welfare give away programs have been a disaster and it is good to see a politician speak up about it.

I also like the fact that Santorum says that Obama is weak and an appeaser and that his foreign policy failures endanger America.
