Santorum Targets Blacks in Entitlement Reform (60 Minutes Left Wing Hatchet Job)
60 Minutes ^ | January 2, 2012 | Lucy Madison

At a campaign stop in Sioux City, Iowa on Sunday, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum singled out blacks as being recipients of assistance through federal benefit programs, telling a mostly-white audience he doesn't want to "make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money."

Answering a question about foreign influence on the U.S. economy, the former Pennsylvania senator went on to discuss the American entitlement system - which he argued is being used to politically exploit its beneficiaries.

"It just keeps expanding - I was in Indianola a few months ago and I was talking to someone who works in the department of public welfare here, and she told me that the state of Iowa is going to get fined if they don't sign up more people under the Medicaid program," Santorum said. "They're just pushing harder and harder to get more and more of you dependent upon them so they can get your vote. That's what the bottom line is."

He added: "I don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money."

"Right," responded one audience member, as another woman can be seen nodding.

"And provide for themselves and their families," Santorum added, to applause. "The best way to do that is to get the manufacturing sector of the economy rolling again."

It is unclear why Santorum pinpointed blacks specifically as recipients of federal aid. The original questioner asked "how do we get off this crazy train? We've got so much foreign influence in this country now," adding "where do we go from here?"

If Santorum wins tonight, expect the attacks from CBS and the rest of the Obama/Democratic media machine to increase exponentially.

They fear him because he is conservative and totally pro-life.

You can tell he’s surging when misleading hit pieces like this pile of crap come out on him.

I don’t think he did single out blacks. Even the transcripts can’t make out what he said.

"has nothing to do with race, and there was no reason for Santorum to single out the blacks"

I'm not sure if you've ever seen the inner-city lifestyles and inhabitants on a fairly regular basis, but their "families" have NO FATHERS in the household (75%+ of them), they have lived on "Government Assistance" for 4 generations, have NEVER held regular jobs, supplement their income with drug sales/thefts/prostitution, and expect that voting Democrat will somehow keep the money flowin' that they get in their EBT cards, food stamps, Medicaid, etc., etc. A large percentage live in Subsidized Housing, and could care less about work.

Now, to ignore that in the race to the White House, where Holder's "people" are expected to vote 90%+ for The Messiah as a given, you think that mention of the method used to secure their votes is inappropriate?

To each his own....

Sometimes old ideas that were wrongly discarded are the best ones.

Sorry, screwed up my post. Let's try again:

The video is here.

Santorum does not speak the word "black". THIS IS A 100% FLAT OUT LIE BY SEE-BS.

The late Pat Moynihan (a Dem, but one of the few sensible ones of his time) could tell you all about that.

They don’t even vaguely wish to put that behind them and become “wealthy”? (Middle class, if not better.)

Has anyone really dug into where they got the idea that this was the way to go. I think black racist hustlers are a large part of it, but that’s only a hunch in my white redneck brain.

Of course he was set up. It was obvious by the person capturing the statement, with the camera, not including the question that was asked and only capturing a snippet of what was probably a 5 minute speech.

Having said that, Santorum was a politician from Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania has a lot of black people. He is a veteran politician and not a newb.

He should have known better to answer the question specifically about black people and make it about people in general, because the issue of welfare reform isn't really about any particular ethnic group, but about generational welfare dependence.

So yes he was set up, but he still deserves a slap for the answer he gave.

"but that’s only a hunch in my white redneck brain"

I suspect it may be more common sense, than a hunch, based on observation.

I've seen decades of this "Plantation Population", and you are exactly on point; they have no intentions of movin' on up, unless it's to be a bigger wheel in a gang, a higher class pimp, or a higher volume drug dealer. They don't care about schoolin', and 1 in 4 doesn't graduate High School. They all have the latest Michael Jordan shoes, and cellphones, etc., somehow, and plasma TV's everywhere.....

Seldom do I see them driving a small car, either.

I currently work among 'em, on a contract job, and see them daily....

I just watched the video and it's clear he said RAT's as in DemocRAT's.

No wonder the MSM is going after him.

If you target entitlements, you will offend the takers, of whatever race. If a demographic group is heavily overrepresented in the taker community, members of that group are bound to feel targeted. The solution of course is to stand on your own two feet, take care of your children, teach them right from wrong, inculcate the advantages of thrift, hard work, studying and, above all, delayed gratification. A challenge for some, I know. But there you are.

I can see how someone can hear “black people” - that’s what I heard the first time, but it doesn’t make sense in context. Unless he was thinking “black people” the whole time when he was talking about the dependent class and it just slipped out then. But he wasn’t, not in Iowa.

You are correct. The NPR people said "black" ~ it's always on their mind.

The Democrat filter is pretty small ~ "black", "tax", "teabag" ~ not much else to it.

They listen for it. Then they swallow it whole.

If you play White Rabbit Album backwards the Beatles tell you "John is Dead" ~ or something like that.

In reality the Beatles were saying "Blacks are dead".

Because it is true. Beginning in 1965, black leaders decided to make the community a client of the Government, hoping that public funds would equalize blacks and whites. Ethnics, such as the Irish, had done this at the state and local level, but blacks were the first to get on the federal teet. Other ethnics also tried to same route, but most have made their way in the private sector also. Blacks are the group most dependent on government for welfare and also employment. So few are their number in private business that black politicians have a hard time stealing from the public. They usually get caught, unlike white politicians who can cover their tracks by profiting indirectly by sending government business the way of their friends.

My guess is that what he said was “a lot of” people rather than “black” people.

Why do conservatives even agree to go on these programs? They always seem to think that this time, they’ll get treated fairly (similar to the way that Charlie Brown believes that this time, Lucy won’t pull the football away at the last second.)

I think the issue is even more basic than you think. While I would agree that leadership in the black community has embraced victim status, the issue isn't their leadership, but rather the welfare state itself. The leadership is just a side show to the real crime.

If you give somebody everything they need for subsistence, an unfortunate human trait is that many will not seek anything else. All it takes is a couple generations of handouts and the damage is done.

A perfect example of this would be the first group the government helped into a cycle of poverty, Native Americans. All it took to make a hearty subsistence society into dependents was a government who was there to help.

Singling out blacks is real dumb. There are plenty of worthless whites on welfare. In a state (Iowa) that is 95% white & 2.5% black, I imagine the welfare office looks more like a NASCAR race than a rap concert.

I thought Pubs were above race & class warfare. Santorum certainly isn't. Santorum is a loser & he knows it. Pandering to racists is pathetic.

One can convincingly attack the entitlement mentality w/o resorting to racism.
