WSJ: Can Perry Come Back?
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 5, 2012 | Stephen Moore

Posted on 01/05/2012 1:16:43 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

National conservative leaders are wondering who, if anyone, can stop Mitt Romney from walking off with the Republican nomination after his narrow win in Iowa and his expected comfortable victory in New Hampshire next week. The name that keeps surfacing is Rick Perry, which says a lot about the desperation that the anti-Romney forces are feeling now.

[snip]

Perry insiders say that the plausible course forward for the candidate is to make this a one-on-one race with Mr. Romney so that the conservative vote doesn't split in two, three or four ways.

South Carolina has a history of deciding the eventual GOP primary winner. If Mr. Perry can take first or second place, he can live to fight another day and prepare for Super Tuesday, when voters in the bulk of Southern states go to the polls. Perry supporters also say that a comeback depends on his ability to make this a North versus South race. They say that three-quarters of Republican voters aren't sold on Mr. Romney. The problem for Mr. Perry, of course, is that even more voters aren't sold on him, either, in part because he has done such a lousy job of educating voters about his admirable record on jobs and growth in Texas.

Many conservative leaders that I talked to after the Iowa caucuses are rallying around the latest flash, Rick Santorum. But others have concluded that despite all of his debate mishaps and his poorly run campaign thus far, Mr. Perry may be the only Republican candidate capable of beating Mr. Romney. As one campaign aide told me: "We have to make a good second impression."

I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage about doing the same thing over and over and over and expecting different results. At some point this has to dawn on Perry supporters. The longer it takes... well... we can’t force them to acknowledge reality. My heart goes out to them.

Say what, partner? McCain? I can’t stand McCain or anything he says lately. Period.

I will vote for Perry if he's still standing by the time New York votes, but sheesh. His record in Texas is all he talks about. I don't think he can do much more.

So does mine.

But hey, they'll ALL come around eventually when Perry clears his mind and endorses the anti-Willard conservative... NEWTORUM!!

ZERO in NH and single digits nationally means Americans, Republicans, conservatives and certainly Granite Staters are completely uninterested in a Perry presidency. His staying in the race is only helping Romney.

People don’t want Bush 2.0 and that’s exactly how Perry will be portrayed by the MSM- and it will work.

The country still has Bush fatigue.

Please God I can't go through another cycle of "dumb cowboy" jokes. Rick's worst problem is being from TX 4 years after Bush left the White House. He should have waited 4 or 8 years.

“Perry 0%”

I call shenanigans on that poll.

There has to be at least one human being in NH for Perry.

Doesn’t there?

“He likely was still on drugs from his back surgery and its not fair, he is smarter than that. However I think that's just the facts of the situation. He can not un-ring that bell.
And that is that? All his record? The Texas record? Jobs? His good debates? His conservative foundation and 10th Amendment fights he's taken on with D.C. (and won)...all that is out the door? None of the other candidates had one poor performance? This is the way we are now? This is American intelligence? “

I am saying 3 things, first, starting with Nixon who won the radio debate with Kennedy but lost the TV debate because he had a touch of the flu and a 4pm razor shadow. TV and marketing are unfortunately the way most candidates make the sale.
Second yes he was interviewed and said he should have postponed his back surgery.
I ruptured a disk on my back and also was on Vicodin for 3 months so I know that's why his debate performance was so bad at first. And lastly no it is not an excuse for the dumb things he has done as Gov like executive orders for girl vaccines and other dumb ideas. Still I like the guy and think he would be a good president, and I did support more conservative candidates in the primary against him.

In a state where Pail,Romney and Huntsman poll 2/3 , why would you expect any votes for a very conservative Southern governor?

What an excellent idea. I think we should all write to them and suggest that very thing. I have been thinking bout writing the FEC and having them monitor it. They’re giving him free campaign advertising.

Really? How? By taking delegates away from the other conservatives?

So?

Or do you not realize that after a candidate drops out, they can instruct their delegates to vote for the person they endorse?

So if Romney gets 25% of the delegates nationwide, he’d have to find a way to scrounge 25% more, should no one hit the magic 50.0001%.

And vice-versa. Between Perry, Newt, and Santorum, they can hash out who’d get their delegates votes... overwhelming the 25% for Romney.

I’d say that, at least, one of the three will have to drop out after Super Tuesday... so their delegates would be up for grabs.

So, what’s that about ‘splitting the vote’?

Yep!

After demolishing the phony Willard by about 10 points in Iowa (thanks to the conservatives/evangelicals of IA)...

10 1/2 year Southern Conservative/Evangelical Huck went on over to athiestic New Hampshire (less churches per capita than any other state) AND came in a strong third — leading up to SC where Huck drew 30%+ of the vote with the lion’s share AMONG CONSERVATIVES and CHRISTIANS. But in 3rd place but waaaaaaaaaaay back of Huck, Sleepy Freddy Thompson took enough (15% max) to allow his friend, Mushy Moderate McCain to squeak out a win over the conservative Huck, 33%-30%. I was there campaigning my butt off even on snowy election day.

Will Romney be this year’s McCain in South Carolina? Not if evangelical conservatives unite.

I believe at least one is being paid and some just love their governor and can’t understand why America doesn’t love him also. Of course there are some who love ILLEGALs. You can tell who those are by their eagerness to attack anyone who doesn’t support Perry calling us ‘ILLEGAL haters’ (we were called ‘Mexican haters’ until it was pointed out that many ILLEGALs were not Mexican). I’m not sure why any FReeper wouldn’t be anti-ILLEGAL alien unless of course they really aren’t conservative and/or they want want their Tio Juan to become legal. Who knows. One thing is certain, though; holding out hope for a candidate who has been in perpetual free fall in the polls, placed 5th in Iowa and is polling ZERO in NH is a lost cause.

Now you are being childish. Threatening to tell the teacher or what?

I hardly think Jim Robinson is interested in banning honest discussion about the virtues of one candidate over another.

Splitting the CONSERVATIVE EVANGELICAL vote in SC and even FL is stupid.

And deep down Perry knows it. As does Willard who he will be helping WIN by staying in.

Pal, if Willard wins SC & FL, we’re dead in November. Obama wins. End of story.
