This is actually a syncretist cult that is a mixture of pagan African witchcraft and the beliefs of small fundamentalist (basically, Pentecostal) Christian churches about demonic possession. Every so often in the Southern US, you’ll read about children being killed because their parents, who attended some tiny Pentecostal church with about 20 members, believed the kids were possessed and were told by their “pastor” to drive the demons out through torture or beatings. I read about a case here fairly recently, in the Midwest, IIRC.
Combined with the native African belief in witchcraft, this is obviously even more horrible and also seems to be pretty widespread in some parts of the Congo where there are a lot of independent fundamentalist churches.
