The best .177 cal. (air) pellet gun to buy [Vanity]
My Brain | 7 January 2012 | Me

Posted on 01/07/2012 8:05:33 AM PST by bjorn14

I live in Norway and as most of you know the handgun laws here are insane but I discovered that .177 cal. pellet guns are exempt from the avalanche of paperwork and most other rules.

With the increasing criminality in Oslo I was thinking of getting one to at least act as a deterent or precieved equalization of the situation. It is better than having nothing.

Prefer CO2 powered. Thanks in advance.

got a gammo, you cock it though, has more power than a .22 rifle out to around 30 yards. with a scope it is deadly accurate.
although for self defense, its probably a joke. you are better off with a baseball bat and a can of mace imho.

I own a Spanish break barrel pellet rifle which is very accurate out to a hundred feet. It mounts a 4X scope.

Move to the USA, and buy all the guns you want, and live where you want.

Forget it. All you’ll do is make the person you shoot angry. Buy yourself a large dog and a fireplace poker.

Throwing heavy or pointy objects might be a better option.

you want an airgun for self defense? Better find one you can attach a bayonet to.

I have a opossum problem, but I live in a subdivision. It is outside the city limits so discharging a firearm is legal, but since possums are nocturnal, most of my possum problems occur at night and I don’t want to upset the neighbors.

So, I got a .177 pellet rifle. 1200 fps with hunting pellets.

I waited for my first possum to arrive and...

..it took 6 shots to kill it. (We have large possums around here!)

Now, I use my Ruger 10/22 to dispatch possums and the neighbors can just deal with the noise, which isn’t much more than the noise from a 1200 fps pellet rifle.

Moral of the story: using a pellet gun against a human predator is pointless. Get a baseball bat if you don’t want to do the paperwork on a firearm.

First, forget CO2.

Second, what are your requirements? Fun plinking? Serious target shooting? Competition? Pest management? What caliber (I got .22 for pest control)? How much energy? What motive force, springer or pre-charged pneumatic (PCP)? The PCPs cost a LOT more to get into, but have some tremendous advantages.

I've got an RWS Model 48 side cocking rifle and a Weiihrauch HW97K under-lever cock. Like both of them a lot.

Go ask your questions on the "Yellow Forum" -- 100% air gun buffs will be happy to give you all the answers you want. That's where I started my research. Search the forum and you'll find lots of people asking the same question - "What rifle should I purchase?"

In addition to PyramydAir, also check out Airguns of Arizona and Air Gun Depot. I've purchased ammunition, accessories, and parts from Pyramyd and have been very happy with their prices and fast service. Be sure to look for their sales.

Lastly, think about buying used guns to start. You can save a lot of money that way. Many serious buffs buy and sell rifles all the time and you get the advantage of them taking the depreciation. High quality rifles really hold their value. I bought both of my rifles on the classified section of the Yellow Forum and was very happy with the service from the sellers.

Carrying a toy to frighten an aggressor is at best foolhardy. Unless the device can serve to disable someone intent on doing you harm, it is nothing more than a pacifier.

If you can’t carry a firearm, perhaps a decent knife, walking stick or gentleman’s cane could better serve. Certainly they don’t carry the potential to frighten as a firearm, but if you take time to develop the skill to use one, your safety won’t be dependent on the slim chance any aggressor can be scared away.

When in a location or situation where the potential for confrontation or danger exists, the most important things is to be aware of your surroundings and any persons or objects that may pose a threat.

And above all, listen to your instincts. When you feel something isn’t quite right, it’s time to leave the area.

Gotta say, I go with the other opinions around here. A pellet gun will never be much more than a bluff or a way of pissing them off. Even a real .22 lr gun is questionable for self defense.

Go with a bat, and whatever chemicals they allow there (pepper spray or mace). A large dog is a good idea as well.

You should be careful up front though and look into the self defense laws in Norway though. It could be that the law looks at “lay back and take it or run” as the only permissible responses. Then the dog is the best bet since it acts as a deterrent.
