The best .177 cal. (air) pellet gun to buy [Vanity]
My Brain | 7 January 2012 | Me

I live in Norway and as most of you know the handgun laws here are insane but I discovered that .177 cal. pellet guns are exempt from the avalanche of paperwork and most other rules.

With the increasing criminality in Oslo I was thinking of getting one to at least act as a deterent or precieved equalization of the situation. It is better than having nothing.

Prefer CO2 powered. Thanks in advance.

I looked up a test where the Sam Yang .50 cal. Dragon Claw produced 180-188 ft-lb of muzzle energy. That compares with roughly 320-340 ft-lb for 9mm or .45 cal handguns, and 116-150 ft-lb for .22 long rifle ammo.

I always thought one of those large caliber pre charged air guns would make a good short to medium range assassination weapon.

One in .45 caliber just under supersonic velocity and with a silencer would be near totally quiet and the cops would almost certainly think it was done with a .45 caliber revolver.

OK, I admit I got the idea from a Sherlock Holmes story.

Shotgun, Mossberg pump action 500 series, select 20g for starters/ your wife & kids then 12g. Generally more accurate for most shooters than a handgun. Ammo readily available.
I don’t know much about crossbows, but if you don’t want a firearm, maybe that would work.

How about a pellet gun that shoots pork projectiles. Just think, you could say stop, or I’m going to shoot you with pork!
Along with a dog you could have a pet pig as your Muzzie defender.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Same here about the inspectionsand the police can come anytime unannounced to make sure your guns are properly stored. They must be in approved gun safe bolted to the floor and an immovable part of the dwelling.

The funny part is I can buy a silencer over the counter no questions asked, no forms to fill out. In fact it’s considered quite neighborly to use one.

I talked to a EMT a goodly time back about his experience in gunshot wounds. While you are correct that a .22 LR can be lethal in one shot. It doesn’t tend to do it in a very timely fashion. There’s usually a fairly lengthy bleed out before it is lethal. Hence if you need to drop a perp, it really isn’t an ideal choice of calibers. The interesting thing he mentioned was that .22s were really lethal in chest shots because they tended to pinball along inside the rib case doing some really nasty damage (as they tend to bounce off ribs rather than penetrate).

My advice is to fill out the paperwork and migrate to the US, and avoid settling in California, Illinois, or any state due north of Virginia. There isn’t a pellet gun in the world that is suitable for self defense, and living in a country where the right to bear arms is heavily proscribed is living with one’s head in an invisible noose.

I`m not the one that posted the thread. He wants to try and use a pellet rifle as a personal defense weapon! The only hope in hell ANYONE would have would be to use a very high powered type and get a shot to the eye, in the hopes that the thin bone of the orbital socket would offer an entrance point into the brain (I know, slim to nothing chance). Personally I`d use my Remington 870 with 00-Buckshot and just take the creep`s head off, but to each his own.

If you're going to use an airgun for self-defense, you really should consider 50 caliber rather than the anemic 177:

i find the gammo insanely accurate, 35 yards can shoot a half inch group. .177 gammo hunter ammo. it is a serious hunting gun, not a toy no way.

still, for self defense, no. whats wrong with mac or a can of bear spray? besides having to get the heck out of the house if you used it?
