Romney Likes ‘Being Able to Fire People’

NASHUA, N.H. — Mitt Romney, already under intense scrutiny for his leadership at venture capital group Bain, inadvertently gave his rivals new material today when he said that he likes “being able to fire people.”

The remarks came during a speech to the Nashua Chamber of Commerce this morning in which he was trying to explain that he would like people to have the option to pick and choose their medical insurance and get rid of plans that don’t meet their needs.

“I want individuals to have their own insurance,” he said. “That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means if you don’t like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.

“You know, if someone doesn’t give me a good service that I need, I want to say I’m going to go get someone else to provide that service to me.”

Anyone who uses that false quote will be discredited. Grow a pair.

Anyone who uses that false quote will be discredited. Grow a pair.

It will be Dems using it, and the media will be joining in, not discrediting, as we have seen here. Get a clue and quit insulting others who are speaking from years of experience watching this.

I have a simple question. Is Newt Gingrich bipolar? Does he take medication?

He just seems off some days. It is an issue that will come up in the Presidential campaign. Mental illness destroyed Tom Eagleton in his bid many years ago when it was taboo to discuss such things. Perhaps it is still taboo.

“I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.”

That is a full sentence and a direct quote of what he said.

It wont be used in context of what he was talking about.

Don't you understand how attack ads work?

Exactly, and I love the Freeper who already accused me of being a (Gulp!) boss!!

I love it when Freepers go commie for their agenda.

The story was a lying headline, an indisputably conservative anti Obamacare remark by Romney, and the rest of the story was absurd as well. Boo hoo they turned up the music loud when the reporters tried to interview some pro union jerk.

I guess Romney controls the earth and can stop all interviews now. Grow up folks, this will be done to any nominee.

If I were Romney, I would demand the Obama administration say straight up if it disagrees with the sentence. To disagree would be indefensible.

You are kidding me, right?

How much indefensible stuff has the Obama Admin done? And how much has the MSM run interference for that stuff?

Dem political ad makers are drooling over this line as we speak.

Poor little thing, providing services for me, that is not an employee, someone providing services, your doctor, your insurance agent, your plumber, your mechanic. And employee provides labor, and I have had to fire both many times. That is what the title owner, boss means. It is also called a free market.

This libs will use this: “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me” OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER. If mittens gets the noms.

Yup.

GraceG "gets it."

And those of you who don't...tell us...

If you only overheard PART of a statement -- a serious (not in jest) statement made by your boss at work -- that this boss "LIKES to fire people who provide services" to him/her...is that a "positive" trait endearing to your heart???

People aren't going to listen to every single word uttered in a sound bite...words that "provide context"...they hear "like to fire people"...

For any of you...is that your "joystick" in life??? Firing people?

Is that something you put on your Facebook home page as somebody you "like" doing?

Really?

We are doing nothing of the sort, jack.

We just don't live in your fantasyland where the Dems and the media will be honest brokers and play by Marquis de Queensbury rules and not selectively edit this sound bite to make Mitt look as bad as possible. No such thing as Marquis de Queensbury rules in politics.

Grow up. Here is another comment following the article (again not mine):

“I’m talking to you rcaferilla2. I am a democrat that would cheer if Romney stepped in it. However, I value respectable press more than anything and this isn’t it. This is spin. This takes something a politician says and tries to change it. It’s a dishonest attempt to crank it up. We have real problems in this country and I don’t appreciate the press not respecting its readers by printing outrage spin over real news. I feel this contributes to this great dysfunction we have going. You and I both know Romney was simply saying he wants the freedom of options when it comes to this line. Granted he’s a complete hypocrite in this entire area, but at this moment this is what he intended and this article is junk.”

So now, the clearly most establishment RINO of the bunch is the one proudly proclaiming bold conservative ideas, and the clearly more conservative candidates are attacking him for it.

This has to be the most messed-up, disappointing primary I've ever had the misery to witness. The sad irony about this is that I think the more conservative candidates, in their desperation to get rid of Romney, are actually making him look more conservative.

This is the Bizarro primary.

NEWT was just interviewed by Shepard about this.

Newt held his own (of course).

Romney is in for the same scorched earth he brought to Gingrich and is already bringing to Gingrich in South Carolin and Florida.

One big difference: Newt’s claims about Romney are verifiably TRUE!

I guess you will just have to whine about all the ads and headlines this will be used in.

Liberals can’t win by being honest, never have, never will.

“Are you both so dense that you can’t tell the difference between every boss who in certain circumstances has no other choice but to fire someone ... vs. someone who says they “like to” fire someone? Really?”

He didn’t say that he likes to fire people, he said that he likes to be able to fire people (i.e. have the power to fire a contractor for poor service). There’s a difference. I guess you didn’t get the memo: you’re not supposed to post articles that make Romney look good on Free Republic.

Well then jackamo I suggest you put on your big boy pants because this and worse will be done to Newt, Perry, Santorum, Palin, etc.

The outrage here is the news story. Newt won Jim Robinson’s Freeper poll earlier. You think Newt can possibly be more careful with his statements?

The target here is the media.

ABC will have to apologize for this headline. The comments below this despicable story are supportive of Romney. The sentence itself was shortened. Don’t play that “the average person will think ..” thing on me.

Do us all a favor, Williams.

Promise before God -- and before us -- right now...

...that when you get any and all future job interviews that include the power to fire somebody...that you prominently state to those interviewing you that you "like to fire" those who provide services to you.

Now...go on...do what you advocate here. Be sure you provide all the context you want. Be sure you add whatever "caveats" and "qualifiers" you would like to add.

Go on with endless comments in that interview about what you "really" mean by that...but don't back down on those words. State that you really "LIKE" to fire people...

Then be sure to write your new book: "An Idiot's Guide on How NOT to interview for a Manager's Position."

(You'll be the PERFECT candidate for authoring such a book!)

Well, duh. Of course it will. Which is why GOP candidates have to take a moment and think before opening their mouths.

The outrage here is the news story. Newt won Jim Robinson’s Freeper poll earlier. You think Newt can possibly be more careful with his statements?

We'll see. I don't recall Newt giving a sound bite that could be used so brutally by the Dems in a ad to hightlight a major weakness in a manner that would turn off droves of voters.

The target here is the media.

Well, duh, again. It always has been. But their target is GOP candidates. You don't give them the hammer to hit you with. Mitt just handed them a pile driver.

I’m very sorry to say this. In response to any liberal smear a certain percentage of Freepers are wimps. I don’t think in all my years here I’ve ever gone that route. Sorry to see when some of you do.

Romney was misquoted, sentence shortened and taken out of context in some ABC News blog. No GOP candidate will be spared this.

Yes, I would take every example of this and charge straight in the face of Obama and the media. I believe 60% of the American people would be supportive.

IMHO.

You mean like all those people who quoted Tina Fey's, "I can see Russia from my house."
