Former U.S. Army Soldier Charged With Trying to Provide Material Support to Terror Group Al-Shabaab

GREENBELT, Md. – A former U.S. Army soldier has been charged with attempting to provide material support to terror group al Shabaab, the Department of Justice announced Monday.

Craig Benedict Baxam was arrested Friday upon return to his home state of Maryland after he was captured in Africa during an alleged attempt to reach Somalia, where the terror group is based.

Baxam, 24, joined the Army in 2007 and served in Baghdad and Korea. During his enlistment, he completed eight months of advanced intelligence and cryptology training, the Justice Department said in a press release.

According to court papers, Baxam secretly converted to Islam days before leaving the Army, one month ahead of completing his deployment in Korea. He returned to Maryland in July 2011 and reportedly sought to move to Somalia to join al Shabaab.

The guy is black, but doesn't come from the usual place where Islam harvests its black converts (prison). His mother is an attorney.

You beat me by 3 seconds. I guess I don't have to feel bad about not searching adequately this time. I wonder if he made any statements about wanting to attack the US, or he just wanted to help Al Shabaab take Somalia. My guess would be the former. He's lucky he's alive being arrested in Kenya trying to help a group Kenya is actively fighting. Ironically his American citizenship probably saved his life.

A lost soul. A pathetic, dumb fool. Are there no NCOs and junior officers in the Army today? How can a soldier convert to Islam without that being a red flag for his immediate leaders? And why was such an obviously troubled kid trained in sensitive areas like cryptography and intelligence? Anyone nutty enough to convert to radical Islam has a screw loose. How could those who live and work with him fail to notice?
