SPARTANBURG, S.C. Newt Gingrich signaled Wednesday that he believes his criticism of Mitt Romneys record at Bain Capital is a mistake and that hes created an impression that he was echoing Democratic rhetoric.
Gingrich conceded the problem when pressed by a Rick Santorum supporter at a book-signing here Wednesday.
Im here to implore one thing of you. I think youve missed the target on the way youre addressing Romneys weaknesses. I want to beg you to redirect and go after his obvious disingenuous about his conservatism and lay off the corporatist versus the free market. I think its nuanced, Dean Glossop, an Army Reservist from Inman, S.C., said.

This is the sort of thing that will cause many to vote for someone other than Newt. He’s very bright and imaginative, a brainstormer, but the most creative brainstormers usually come up with some very bad ideas as well as good ones.
Another of Newt’s brainstorms landed him on that couch with Nancy Pelosi. How long before he’d have other, equally out there brainstorms if in the White House? There definitely need to be some checks and balances on Newt and his ideas.
“we call that flip flopping in the intellectually honest world”
Now that is pure ignorance. I would hope you would be better than that. GO NEWT!
I am leaning towards Santorum, but I realize that even W beats all of these guys by a mile.
“Sadly, that shows up one of Gingrichs major weaknesses a thin skin.”
Come now. Newt received 45% of the negative adds in Iowa and 90% in New Hampshire. Newt was just returning the fire. GO NEWT!
Newt must of read this morning’s editorial in the WSJ. Intimidation by the MSM! MF Global is good, too.
I see that the RINO Romney types have really infiltrated this post. Karl Rove has a big smile reading some of these posts. GO NEWT!
Lol @ people who conflate ‘capitalism’ with ‘Bain Capital’.
With defenders like this, no wonder capitalism is losing the war of ideas.
Newt has done more irreparable harm to the hard-enough-job of convincing the stupids who vote that capitalism is bad, than any dem could. That alone should be enough to rule out any hope of a presidential run for him. A man with his vindictiveness and bitterness, and who cannot control his anger in the public forum has no business running the country. Thanks Newt.
This is exactly why the powers that be may not, in fact, be wanting a conservative to win. Candidates like this never will.
Please keep me posted on what he says, will you truthkeeper? I won’t be available to listen.
I wonder if Perry is going to do any more “night patrols” with Newt? Winners Romney, Santorum; Losers Newt, Perry. But Perry might be able to turn this into a win if he plays it right. Big if. Paul gets points for being consistent and right.
Good...electing an attack dog who would go after the dems for revenge or otherwise once in office sounds like a good plan to me.
How could he not? He's a nitwit.
Every politician makes gaffes at one point or another. Which one hasn’t? That doesn’t mean that it’s preferable to nominate Mitt Hussein “I like being able to fire people” Obomney for the Oval Office.
This just sounds like a campaign strategy...Now, Newt can distance himself from the attacks that are being leveled against Bain and move on to other points. The attacks will still have an effect with Romney having to answer questions about Bain instead of what he wants the talking points to be.
Who knows if it will work?
Newt’s playing the game..and the candidates as he thinks the game should go....He’s doing exactly what he said he would do..an unconvential campaign. I won’t underestimate his game plans...and what he carries out...and will give it time to see where the plays go....He’s on the move and I like what’ he’s doing.
That’s the problem with stoopid attack. He might say sorry for missing on the rug but the odor still lingers.
I'm hoping Santorum can keep gaining support and have good showing in SC and Florida. He's my favorite of those left, but I'm also beginning to be resigned that we won't have a great presidential candidate and am turning some interest to the possible gains in the Senate. I think we'll need good control of the House and Senate no matter who the next president is.
And only Congress can repeal Obamacare and send it to the president for signature.
Thats a worthless nuance. Somebody is always going to get laid off; otherwise how do you reallocate capital?
This whole line of attack by "Republicans" is obscene and idiotic. The Stupid Party.
That’s the problem with stoopid attack. He might say sorry for missing on the rug but the odor still lingers.
Once again, the Political headline is untrue.
Newt didn't apologize for anything and did not say that he crossed the line.
Newt laid the blame at Obama's feet.
There are a very few Romney supporters left on FR. The criticism of Newt was not support for Romney.
It was support for capitalism and it isn’t conservative to adopt the lamguage and class warfare of the left.
This stuff wasn’t a gaffe. This was poor judgment.
I am aware of what a gaffe is. I can forgive gaffes. I wish that was all it was.

Gotta appreciate the irony of FReepers who rail against the duplicitous nature of the MSM, yet ineluctably fall for the MSM’s tricks every time.
This whole thing is a Politico hit-piece spinning Gingrich’s comment entirely out of context.
Newt trying to rescue his chances in South Carolina won’t be easy to do, now that they have seen him attacking from the left. Strange times!
Ha...some just can’t see the Newt plays for what they are...get a dose of political theatre to understand..it might help you.
A gaffe is when you unintentionally say what you really think.
It never ceases to amaze how quickly some can admit a wrong and be forgiven, while others...NEVER!
Ding. Ding. Ding. The aforementioned sickening video on the Chris Matthews propaganda show (masquerading as news).
Chrissy had to have gotten permission from the DNC to release this now instead of waiting, since Newt let the cat out of the bag. They will call this strategy 'Occupy_Whatever'.
It is a hit-piece and conservative have been played for fools this whole primary. Game, set, match by GOP. And how did the last election go with the GOP calling the shots? Our focus should have been on who has the best policies to turn this country around, and the strength and experience to make it happen. Unfortunately this missed opportunity will cost us our country.
That is sad commentary, sad but very true.
More and more this whole lot is looking like “The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight.”
Reuters reports in "Special report: Romney's steel skeleton in the Bain closet" that Romney's Bain Capital took a $44 million government bailout in 2002 from the federal U.S. Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp after they determined that Bain had underfunded its steel mill's pension by $44 million. Workers were denied the severance pay and health insurance theyd been promised, and their pension benefits were cut by as much as $400 a month. Nevertheless, Bain profited on the deal, receiving $12 million on its $8 million initial investment and at least $4.5 million in consulting fees.
Spot on. The heats only going to get hotter on Romney. If he can’t turn this around now, he needs to start losing and fast.
Do you REALLY think Perry even knows how to put on a ringtone?...much less had anything to do with it?
Anyway, you are about 2 or 3 months behind...you're still hung on "heartless."
In your "heartless" you know Perry is right!
Wrong,
I lie then followed by lies now. Why do some republicans fall for every attack media makes against other Republicans?
Yes, the “leopards” known as the mainstream media and the liberal left can’t change their “spots” of smearing any popular or powerful conservative with falsehoods and lies...

Newt shot himself in the foot with these remarks, IMHO. Pretty hard to walk it back now.
Here is some good advice for Newt. He should have made a Newt Gingrich truth telling movie about the extreme danger in another term for Obama.
That would have been a real win and would have elevated Newt in a way people are looking for.
So according to you, Mitt Romney is now the only Republican who can beat Obama this year? Who are you, George Snuffalupagus or Karl “Lapdog” Rover?
Santorum - behind Newt in NH
Huntsman - behind Newt in IA
Paul - yeah, right

One of these thing is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong...
HINT Ted Baxter.
What about when you can’t remember that third thing you were going to say?
Oops.
What kind of decoration did you get?
I’m jealous. I never get any.
"Lately, Bain founder and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has found himself in a spirited defense of the private equity industry, doing all he can to spin decades of data which confirm, without failure, that PE Leveraged Buy Outs are nothing but "efficiency maximizing" transactions whose only goal is the "maximization" of EBITDA in the pursuit of dividend recap deals, IPOs or outright sales, while loading up the company with untenable amounts of leverage. All this with a 3-5 year investment horizon, which ignores the long-term viability of a company and seeks to streamline (read fire as many as possible) operations as quickly as possible in the goal of maximizing short-term returns. We wish him luck in his endeavor."Shame we have so many wannabe Capitalistas here at FR and elsewhere, who adamantly defend this kind of shuck and jive financial paper shuffling as exemplary acts of free-market enterprise.
That was dumb and I don’t think Romney missed a ‘teaching moment’. He said what he believes, although at the very end he does come out for shrinking government. Campaign gaffe due to exhaustion or...?
