Can Issa, Wyden Change Piracy Debate?

The debate in Congress over the best way to shut down foreign websites that steal U.S. copyright material and sell counterfeit goods could be about to shift. At least that's the hope of Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.; and Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who outlined their strategy during a Wednesday press briefing with reporters at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The unlikely partners have teamed to oppose two bills in the House and the Senate, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) that would shut down foreign websites by forcing search engines and domain name servers to block the infringing sites, an approach the lawmakers say will damage the

architecture of the Internet.

Issa, Wyden and a group of bipartisan, bicameral lawmakers are pushing a bill called the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act (OPEN), which would use the International Trade Commission to shut off the funds that support the infringing websites.

Serious subject : this battle is key to keep these internet government censorship bills off of Obama’s desk.

Congress must be getting tips from China on how to handle the internet.

10 Months before they want my vote,,, the GOP is leading the charge for SOPA or some renamed version of it.

If you repubs guys read this,,, for me this is a bright F-ing line. ANY version passes,, no vote,, period, no compromise. And the “piracy” and “copyright” justification is meaningless BS.

“Homeland Security” was said to be desperately needed to prevent another 9/11. A mere 10 years later, they are searching children entering proms and passengers LEAVING rail terminals, they are going door to door in Tennessee, defining a Ron Paul sticker, military service, or a “don’t treat on me” flag as Terror indicators, they are asserting conrol over livestock, gardening and crops, they even post videos on the dangers of Turkey Frying! And to top it off, they are fighting to reduce fear of muslims.

This will not stop at pirated movies and music. You know it, we know it.

Sure, price the item in question so low that it isn't worth buying the fake. When VHS first came out they were charging $45 for a movie. And everyone pirated everything. Now you can download unlimited movies for $8 per month. It just isn't worth the time and effort to be a pirate. But if Netflix runs up their prices, the pirates will be back.

No amount of laws will stop the pirates. No matter how many times they tried to stamp out MP3 downloads they just kept failing. The answer was simply to charge a few cents a song. At that price it was easier just to go to the legitimate site where the search engine was better.

dont worry, our leaders will eventually shut down communications...its the natural step they MUST have before they can begin to round up resistors...

The thing with irony is that it is so ironic... 'OPEN'... HA!
