Richard Viguerie has an interesting observation regarding the methodology of Ron Pauls campaign intended to leave Paul as the last not-Romney standing, Ron Paul Goes Bird Hunting:
"Experienced bird hunters and fighter pilots know you dont aim for the leader of a flight you start at the back of the flight and work your way forward. This is apparently what Congressman Ron Paul is doing to his opponents in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
Rather than aim at purported frontrunner Mitt Romney (who should be the number one target of his libertarian supporters), Ron Paul has been working his way through the flock of less well-funded and less well-defined opponents, thinning the field as he goes.
After raking former Speaker Newt Gingrich with fire in Iowa, the libertarian-oriented congressman from Texas has been zeroing-in on former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum in South Carolina."
And zeroing in on Santorum he is, In South Carolina, Paul Renews Santorum Attack:

Ron Paul's foreign policy is isolationist. I believe this is very important to him.
Ron Paul's social policy is very Liberal. I believe this is very important to him.
Ron Paul's fiscal policy is Conservative. I believe he'd sacrifice this for the other two.
I believe that Ron Paul is campaigning to get Obama re-elected.

“Going after the arguably most conservative man in the race.”
Would you say that if Santorum accepts Romney’s offer to be vice-president? That’s a real question.

I can’t believe people don’t rebel against these commercials...corrupt? Hypocrite? Anyway, it seems Paul thinks Gingrich is done so he is going after Santorum next. Big Mistake. He should keep his foot on Newt’s throat or he will stand back up.

Why Santorum and not Perry or Newt? Maybe because Santorum is the most threat to really taking him out along with Perry, Newt, and Huntsman.

ronpaulie will compete in all 50 states all the way through June and in all the state conventions that select the delegates. They are relentless.
the fact that they have outworked the GOP right is troubling. We need to confront this national movement.

No you are a bottom feeder unworthy of further attention. You don’t have the manhood to admit that Ron Paul has never done anything but help RINOs win, there’s virtually no chance you ever will.

And I also knew that you would would try accusing anyone who questions your candidate Santorum’s motives of being for Paul, but I am for Gingrich.
You are pathetic.

They are telling us we don’t matter, again. They keep this up and a rebellion of a third party will grow. I hope that would be a conservative party.

Why Santorum and not Perry or Newt?
Perry doesn't have enough supporters to matter in the long run and has taken himself out of the race, and Newt has too much money backing him for the time being.
Paul maybe hoping that Newt and Romney damage each other or spend a lot of their money dragging each other down, and then he swoops in when they run a little low on cash and dumps millions into new attack ads.
Santorum on the other hand, Paul probably has more money backing him than Santorum, and Santorum was able to pick up a bunch of undecideds in Iowa, and Paul wants undecideds. They are the easiest pickings.
Of course, Paul should not be a major player at all - his backers are mostly Libertarians. South Carolina being an open primary is going to help those Libertarians cross over to the GOP primary and vote for him unfortunately. Numbskulls in South Carolina finally figured out that maybe they shouldn't have an open primary, but it's too late to do anything about it.
If Paul were a Republican, he'd be going after Romney more, but if you're Ron Paul, there is no way in hell you'll be able to get any Romney supporters over to your side. He may have decided that's a lost cause.

There is definetely an alliance between the RINOs and Ron Paul. The Conservative candidates are under attack from the msm and RINOs including Ron Paul. They have been hitting Newt the hardest as I think they think he is the strongest one.

You give Paul too much credit...

Strategically, it makes sense to knock Santorum out of the race. Even Paul supporters know that if Mitt wraps up SC, the primaries will pretty much be over.
