Actor Gene Hackman, 81, was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami on Friday after a car struck the bicycle he was riding in Islamorada, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Hackman was heading southbound near the 88 mile marker on the Old Highway around 3 p.m. when struck from behind by the right front fender of a 2007 Toyota Tundra driven by Kathryn Rodriguez, 60, or Islamorada, FHP Sergeant Thomas E. Pikul said.

Turns out the guy had just left a showing of “The French Connection”...ironic, huh?
I was sad when he announced his retirement a few years back.
True to his word, he has not appeared in a film since.
Hope he is not seriously hurt.
OK, you caught me...
File under “Things that make ya go ‘hmmmmm’...”
Ya never know, strange things do happen ...
o.m.g. put down the crack-pipe and go get some fresh air NOW.
A Tundra in Florida? Now that would be funny, if this weren't a sadly common situation.
Because seriously, folks, people driving
tanks SUVs have a harder time seeing objects to the side and below of their tanks SUVs. They are therefore much more likely to strike bicyclists, pedestrians, pets ... and children.
No need for a Tundra in Florida. Not if you're just toolin' around town.
dang capitalist got a hospital named after him.
I have an SUV in Fl. None of your business. I buy my gas...
He was one of my favorites too. He was a real working actor and could play just about any part.
My first thought, what is he doing over there. My second, when did Gene Hackman get to be 81 years old. Hope he is okay!
“The name Islamorada, meaning “purple island”, came from early Spanish explorers in the area. Its pronunciation has been Anglicized to aisle-a-more-AH-dah.” From Wikipedia
I saw this note on his IMDB bio page:
2001: Was involved in a road-rage incident when two young men attacked him for hitting their car in Hollywood.
Hope he’s going to be okay.
Riding a bike in the Florida Keys is hazardous to your health,
And now we have the Islam (orada) Connection.
Think Isla Morada...
But what I said is the truth. Vehicles that were built for off-road driving should stay that way ... i.e. off the road, where the road is your typical urban or suburban street.
You buy your own gas? Great! Gotta keep supplying those OPEC countries with American $$$$.
My favorite Gene Hackman role is the blind hermit in Young Frankenstein. He’s actually a brilliant comic actor.
I propose a law to ban all SUVs in Florida unless a verified (any form of certified gov’t ID) resident can provide sufficient evidence that a need is required for such a vehicle. If need is not determined to be valid by a panel of seven delegates appointed by the governor, then no vehicle over 1,500 pounds should be allowed.
Does that sound good to you?
More likely named as a combo of ISLA (Island) & Morada (look out for bicyclist;-) or in this drivers case perhaps "I Slam a rider" would be more appropriate.
Hope the old Marine is okay.
If you’re serious, you’re a moron.
Psst.... A Tundra is a pickup truck.
Not if you're just toolin' around town
Some people use pick up trucks to tote their tools.
At least he didn't get run over by one of those tourists.
Hoosiers is my favorite.
From personal observation, usually it’s the bicyclist behaving badly, not the car driver. Not that the car driver is particularly innocent, but it’s usually the bicyclist breaking one or more traffic laws to begin with.
He is also one of my favorites also. Hope he pulls through.
He is also one of my favorites also. Hope he pulls through.
for the record, a tundra is a pickup truck.
Your prejudice indicates your inability to drive
1. Why was he on a HIGHWAY with a bicycle? Bicycles are usally barred from highways.
2. When bicyclists are required to pay registration, insurance, and get annual inspection fees as well as hold a valid license, they may have a point about equal road access. Until then, stay on the damn sidewalk.
Or, you know, haul things. :P
Its my choice. Welcome to the USA... I get 13 mpg and pay for it royally.
Little Bill Daggett: It's been a long time, Bob. You run out of Chinamen?
English Bob: Little Bill, well I thought you was, well I thought that you were dead. I see you've shaved your chin whiskers off.
Little Bill Daggett: I was tasting the soup two hours after I ate it.
English Bob: Well, actually, what I heard was that you got knocked off your bicycle, drunk... of course, and that you broke your bloody neck.
Little Bill Daggett: I heard that one myself, Bob. Hell, I even thought I was dead... 'til I found out it was just that I was in Islamorada.
How are you going to get your fishing tackle, coolers, hunting equipment, sport equipment, team mates, families, luggage, and yourself to all those “off road activities” if you can’t drive your SUV on the road?
Riding a bike in Florida is dangerous because most of the population is grey haired and barely able to see over the steering wheel...
By the way, here are some typical bicyclists that I’ve seen.
They almost ALL do stupid crap like this. And then they wonder why they get hit. Note: Videos not shot from an SUV.
Even after I came to a screeching halt, they STILL tried to cross in front of me and in the face of another oncoming car.
I wish Gene Hackman would come out of retirement also. He is one of my all-time favorites. The first movie I remember him being in was Bonnie and Clyde. He was great as Buck Barrow but I thought the woman who played Blanche Barrow stole the film. I hope he has a complete recovery.
My first thought after reading these comments is, how sad. A great actor has been hurt and all I see are idiotic put downs on SUVs, the elderly, gas usage, and bicycle on roads.
Good show there!
Well you have to buy your gas.
They make you pre-pay.
It is against the law in most places to ride your bikes on the sidewalk. It is likely he was on the shoulder of the road if there was one... When passing a cyclist the standard is give 3ft of clearance if you must pass. Cycling is BIG in Florida and especially in communities that are considered retirement or vacation communities. There are bike lanes everywhere.
What concerns me, as a law abiding cyclist... is that certain folks are really hostile...even if we’re riding in a wide shoulder/bike lane. Some drivers intentionally come close, honk horns, yell out the windows and are generally miserable a-holes to the cyclists. I’ve considered just getting a helmet-cam to get their license plates.
Cudo’s for Hackman for exercising in his senior years. I ride with some guys in their 70’s and they are awesome, long time cyclists.
