Romney opens 21-point lead in South Carolina: Reuters/Ipsos(sample 995 SC reg. voters 398R 380D)

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has opened a wide lead over his rivals in the South Carolina primary election race, trouncing Newt Gingrich and gaining momentum in his march toward the party's nomination, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, could all but quash his rivals' presidential aspirations with a victory in South Carolina on January 21 after winning the first state-by-state nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Voters in South Carolina - who have favored Republicans in nine of the last 10 presidential elections - appear to have shrugged off attacks on Romney by rivals who accuse him of killing jobs as a private equity executive for Bain Capital in the 1990s.

The poll showed 37 percent of South Carolina Republican voters back Romney. Congressman Ron Paul and former Senator Rick Santorum tied for second place with 16 percent support.

Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, has fallen far back after holding a strong lead in South Carolina in December. He was in fourth place at 12 percent in the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

I should have read the entire article before posting, I’m surprised RP didn’t win it. I’m also surprised, but I’m learning fast, that Fox would give the big headline to an online poll and not mention in their header that it was an online poll’

Drudge as well. And Real Clear Politics is not even listing it. They stil have Romney at only +4.7

Now it’s 11:30 central Sunday and Fox Nation still has as the big feature lead story “ROMNEY HAS MASSIVE LEAD IN SOUTH CAROLINA” and still no mention until you get deep into the linked article itself that it an “on-line” poll.

Paul is getting the tea party vote with Santorum. This is crazy.

When Newt was up in the polls a lot were saying everyone get behind him.It looks like all need to get behind Santorum now.

Internet push poll. Nice try by the pollster. But completely worthless.

Not worthless. Contrived to reinforce the inevitability of Romney. This will sway some voters.

“Mitt look like a strong conservative by attacking capitalism.”

Crony Captialism and Captialism are two different things. Mitt is getting a lot of help from other establishment crony captialist esp. those in the media.

Seems I remember Newt standing up and defending the social conservatives in the last debate. In fact, he is the ONLY canadidate that did.

> I think this is BS also. Here in upstate South Carolina, I have found NO ONE supporting RINO ROMNEY.I believe Romney will be wondering what happened after the votes are counted.

I’m praying for the best, but... keep in mind who will be counting the votes.

And remember the RINO Establishment is doing a full-court press for Myth.

Can someone explain to me how a poll with 49% Democrat respondents in a CLOSED PRIMARY is nothing but an attempt at spin?

That is our problem it is NOT a closed primary. For some insane reason the Republican Party has decided to let others select OUR nominee.

If it were an actual unbiased primary ELECTION , instead of a manipulated selection process, Romney would lose by a landslide,

as it is it looks like we got McCained in the a double s again

Two words:

Online - and - Reuters

‘nuff said.

Romney may still have a small lead, but it has been steadlity shrinking the last week and come next weekend this vte will be absolutely up for grabs. I believe Newt or Santorum still can take it.

If one of them does, then Perry and the other need to bow out so the conservative vote can come together around a single candidate so the race in Florida then also becomes a horse race.
