At the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday ceremony Friday at City Hall, the Rev. Talbert W. Swan II offered a brief history lesson for younger members of the audience.
The causes championed by King five decades ago are the same ones civil rights activists are campaigning for today, said Swan, the new president of the Springfields NAACP chapter.
Jobs and justice, Swan told the overflow crowd, including students from the citys Martin Luther King Charter School of Excellence.
Just as in 1963, we find ourselves in the same predicament today, needing jobs and justice, he said.
Five decades after playing a pivotal role in Springfields civil rights struggle, the local chapter is seeking to recapture the urgency of the 1960s and channel it into social and economic change.
In the past year, the Springfield chapter has recruited about 100 new members to carry out an agenda that puts new emphasis on health, education and economic empowerment along with more familiar issues like law enforcement practices and sentencing reform.

The Klan, the Nazis,The Commies, the Fascists also failed to keep the hate alive and are now defunct though Obama is doing his best to resuscitate the Commies.
Sorry pal but you're not going to get it with Barry and the 'RATS.
wasn't that an Elton John song?
“...needing jobs and justice.”
Reminds me of something Richard Pryor said in one of his routines. He said that black people went to the court for justice. Because when you were in court that is all you saw, “Just us.”
I don't know why they bother. There are only like 2 black people in Springfield, and they seem to be doing ok. Hell, one of them is the town doc!
‘’...needing jobs and justice’’.< “Justice’’ is a paycheck for an honest days work and Homey needs to get off his ass to find a job.
We need more Republicans like that!
Jobs and justice
Jobs: Get off your lazy butts and go to work.
Justice: Quit committing crimes.

Hey, all y’all colored people! Join up now!
I wonder if I can join. I’m colored. Some years ago I checked myself against the Benjamin Moore color chart and I wasn’t white. I was something like Moroccan Cream or Brazilian Latte or some other metrosexual color name like that. So I’m officially colored. And I’m a ‘People.’ And I want to ‘Advance’ myself.
I remember ‘Janny and the Bats.’
Another one is a cop (Lou?)
: )
Martin Luther King Jr. wanted people to be judged by things other than the color of their skin.
So much for that; I do wish he could see how much worse things have gotten. Once the government decided there was no resolution to the contraband issue that dogged them since the Civil War, it opened the floodgates to replace them with Hispanics while capping the benefits of the “cash for kids” program. The “change” happened ten years earlier than anticipated; by 2000 Hispanics had become the largest minority group, and were displacing blacks in city halls, the workplace, even prisons...
I was around the 60s race riots and it wasn't pretty. My uncle was driving and folks ahead let a car go (had been rocking it to try to turn it over) and turned their attention on us. My uncle told me the bastards were in for a surprise if they thought he would stop for them and sure enough he punched it as they thought they had us. Don't remember any thuds, but did see the whites of a few eyes as they realized and tried to get out of the way.
