Stereotypes are nasty things. But in order for them to have any currency, they must be based on some element of truth. Nobody speaks of lazy, shiftless Scotsmen, or drunken, wife-beating Jews. There most certainly are such individuals, but they do not, and never have typified the culture/ethnic background from which they come. Neither do the stereotypes actually used, but some small germ of truth must keep them circulating. So the stereotypes of Joos! is that we are, inter alia, smart and devious, of Arabs is that they are, inter alia, devious and smart, in those respective orders. Then why is it that Hannibal says he can break into bank accounts of 10 million Muslims in Saudi Arabia and Iran? Why not just do it. He'd be rolling in dough if he acted fast enough, and with a bit of selectivity he might have impoverish some evil people who really deserve to be brought down. Was that smart?
