True, unless the round is subsonic which they get pretty quiet, but they do allow you to use a range without ear protection comfortably.

Not true. They reduce muzzle blast in all cases. Subsonic rounds reduce the sound of the projectile downrange.
Actually, silencers are very useful for supersonic rounds. They won’t affect the “crack” of the shockwave (which is of little harm to the shooter’s ears) but they do a great job on the muzzle blast.
Also, the “crack” depends on the size of the projectile. With a 223 or 17 it’s pretty minimal (an airplane is another matter).
