For sale: Hearse that carried John F. Kennedy's body in Dallas

An auto auction company in Scottsdale, Ariz., plans to sell a 1964 Cadillac hearse that company executives say transported the body of President Kennedy after he was assassinated in Dallas. The car was used to take the body from Parkland Memorial Hospital to Love Field Airport, where Air Force One was waiting to return it to Washington.

The Barrett-Jackson company has posted photos of the hearse on its website, along with a history of the vehicle.

From another article:

"The hearse was built by the Miller-Meteor company as a display vehicle to introduce the new model year body at the National Funeral Directors Association Convention held in Dallas in October of 1963. At the end of the convention, the O'Neal Funeral Home bought the hearse not knowing that just a month later, on November 22, they would use it to transport the body of President Kennedy."

Back in the day, was it a big deal for the families to know their loved ones were being carried the hearse that transported JFK? Was that a big sell in the funeral arrangements?

I’m so sick of hearing about JFK. The man was a womanizer, and he was a pig.

Glad he’s gone.

Well, the Lincoln he was shot in is on display in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. The limo that Reagan used is also there, I believe.

Since it is a safe bet the Henry Ford Museum will not display a Cadillac, Obama will request funding for a Government Motors Museum.

I suppose not, since the blurb that I found (upthread) stated that the O'Neal Funeral Home bought the hearse *not* knowing that it would be used to haul Kennedy's carcass.

Now, if it had said that the funeral home bought it while knowing that it *would* be so used - my, wouldn't the conspiracists have fun with that?

I think you missread my post.
The hearse stayed in service for the O’Neals for a few more years and then another funeral home bought it for use.

“Does it look the way it did back then?

A collector — a member of our club — owned it after the second funeral home painted it a brown, sort of a dark gold color, and he repainted it white and restored it in the 1990s.”

Car collectors who have "thing" for hearses... enough of them to form a club, even. Who knew?

I'm afraid to look, but I'll bet there's even a website.

How could a 1964 hearse transport Kennedy when the assassination took place in 1963?

Good question. We all know the answer, but imagine historians 100 years from now!

Any day now you’ll be able to buy a 2013 year model. Oh, and by the way, have you seen the May issue of Playboy magazine on newstands now?
