Newt grabs himself a South Carolina lifeline. Gingrich wins debate as Mitt Romney stumbles
Mail Online ^ | 17 Jan 12 | Toby Harnden

Posted on 01/17/2012 6:37:23 AM PST by xzins

Newt Gingrich's fluent, policy-rich performances in the early debates, laced with derision for the media's attempts to question the Republican candidates, propelled him to the front of the GOP pack in early December.

His command of the stage here in Myrtle Beach for the 16th (yep, there have been that many, and the next is in Charleston on Thursday) could just be the lifeline he needs to achieve the task he has set himself - overcoming Mitt Romney's clear lead in the South Carolina polls to win the state on Saturday.

Romney was under pressure over releasing his tax returns (he eventually said that he would "probably" do so in April), on why he had not objected as Massachusetts governor to felons on parole having the right to vote and he gave an awkward, fumbling response to a softball about whether he had been hunting since 2007, even mixing up moose and elk.

Gingrich, however, ... scored quite a few points against Romney and the former Speaker's fluency with policy and ability to dissect questions and make a big-picture conservative case against Obama made him the night's big winner.

There were two standing ovations for Gingrich in the hall, where 3,000 Republicans roared, cheered ...

Gingrich said that in the debate room "there was a strong sense that somebody finally just had the courage to tell the truth about how we've got to go about helping people".

"...it's clear if you look at the polls the only conservative who can beat Romney in South Carolina is Newt Gingrich... we have five days to win South Carolina. I think we will win South Cariolina."

A lot of conservatives are queasy about Romney and unconvinced that he could beat the President in November.

Romney has very strange money dealings with Soros and with the 911 Mosque.

Yep. I thought Newt might've intended to bring that up with his other criticism of Bain Capital. Alas, nothing yet. Maybe he's saving it 'til just before the Florida primary, when it might do the most damage.

The Soros stuff is unsavory as Hell, but not surprising with a company like Bain. The 9/11 Mosque connection, though - that's highly toxic. Why leave that arrow in the quiver?

No Problem. If you listen to the question again you will notice that Juan make a point of including the fact that Newt was speaking in an all black church when he was discussing the issue that he was questioned about. It's my understanding that white GOP candidates don't visit the black communities let alone their churches very often.

SO since Juan is black and many were listening to his questioning because he's a role model(how many AA moderators have the other stations used) was he in fact telegraphing more pro-Newt message to the black community than is obvious to the white listener?

That's my dissertation topic LOL

SC has an open primary IIRC hmmmmmm????

I remember the News Media saying Bill Clinton was the smartest politician in history. He could talk on the phone to Arafat while doing the NY Times crossword puzzle.

I thought how smart is he that he would gamble the highest office of the land for an average looking fat chick? My conclusion “not that smart.”

I have always admired Gingrich, but does he not have a six shooter cemented to his foot? So smart he can't control his mouth? He can't control his spending (jewelry) he can't control his ethics? He can't control his beliefs? Not smart enough to know not to ever be caught on camera with Pelosi?

He's a hell of a speaker, a great historian, but as arrogant as they come. Which means he lacks real confidence and lacks personal intuition.

After Newt got bullied in Iowa, he announces to the world he is now going to take the gloves off?

The smart guy just does it he doesn't need to announce it. When you kick the ass of a bully the whole neighborhood knows it.

Just an observation.

I agree; to this point, I have yet to see or hear anything from Juan that lacks from sincerity of belief about love of country (as opposed to love of ideology, self, power and greed—like the rapid liberals, and republican elitists/establishment.

Ron Paul said taxes should be zero.

He will spin it to say he meant we should abolish the income tax or something like that.

It was interesting at one point when Gingrich said something along the lines of “getting support” to enact his program.H e’s the only one with the either the integrity or the knowledge to make that clear.

That makes Ron Paul’s statement about zero taxes such a contrast. Paul isn’t getting anyone to follow him anyplace, yet he comes out with this garbage about zero taxes and trillion dollar spending cuts in the 1st year.

He knows, I know, you know, and the whole world knows that Congress doesn’t work that way. I doubt they’d follow him to the water fountain for a drink, much less in cutting taxes to zero and spending by a trillion the first year.

trusts Obama not to abuse his powers under the NDAA

I heard that and nearly gagged.

I guess Romney hasn't been reading about "Fast and Furious" has he? Of all that was said last night by Romney, that tipped the scale past clueless and went all the way to "stupid".

And it means that the blue-bloods have accepted Obama as a club member.

Good word. Thanks. It’ll go on the list of what candidates to describe that Ron Paul plaint-whine or whatever it is. Drives me nuts.

Jay Nordlinger at NRO: "On this, I’m not wrong, I know: When Newt’s on, he is thrilling. I keep saying that in these debate notes, I realize. But it’s true. The best thing that can happen to Newt is a journalist’s decision to tangle with him, especially from the left.

Suggest he’s a racist because he talks about the dignity of work and the indignity of food stamps? He’ll clean your clock. At least in my book."

Rich Lowry at NRO: "He was absolutely splendid. He proved once again that if debating was all it took to become president, he’d be president, Secretary General of the U.N., and King of Siam."

Newt is getting special treatment in the debates. If Newt is elected President, the First Lady will be his former mistress. Why isn’t that question asked directly? Why do they just hint at it in an embarassed manner, like the way the Governor of Texas hinted at it, yet didn’t directly ask it? This is a recipe for failure. Anyone who thinks this won’t come up in the general election is being delusional. It doesn’t matter how smart Newt is if the voters play stupid and pretend this won’t happen. Because it will. For a forgiven man, as he professes, he sure does get an attitude. I say, he is still struggling with the issue, he is much too angry. Anyone who is that angry, still has problems. Anger is the root of all major sin. Don’t trust him when he says he is forgiven.

He can't control his spending (jewelry)

Can you show where Newt is in financial trouble due to jewelry purchases? What is the entire story about his financial difficulty stemming from jewelry purchases?

He proved once again that if debating was all it took to become president..

In Obama's case, not even that was necessary. Just an adoring press and a guilt-ridden electorate. Well that, plus a functioning and omnipresent teleprompter.

I guarantee you that Romney will be hit in the general election with Bain Capital, using taxpayer money to fund either entering or exiting some of his deals, his flip-flops on abortion/gay marriage/guns/taxes, and, of course, RomneyCare.

Against that, we have Gingrich being hit for getting divorced twice.

My take is this: there are now zero families in the United States who either are not divorced at least once, or who have children, siblings, parents or first cousins who have not gotten divorced. I don’t think it will play well as an attack ad.

Besides, Roman Catholicism is America’s largest church, and they annulled Newt’s previous marriage, the meaning of which is that they weren’t right in the first place.

Romney has lost 2 out of 3 races he’s ever been in. He was pounded to death by Kennedy over Bain Capital. Do you honestly think Obama won’t use that?

What a lot of freepers are confusing is the fact that the brand of "Corporatism" that Romney used to amass his fortune is not "Capitalism".

Romney's corporatism relied heavily on manipulating the local, state and federal governments to give his companies tax incentives, subsidies, government contracts and when all else failed he was able to bankrupt the company, loot it of its assets by borrowing money to pay himself dividends and then hiding behind the corporate shield from any personal liability for the debts he and his venture capital company incurred.

Corporatism is Capitalism on government supplied crack.

Crony Corporatism.

How many people do you know whose first job out of college is telling corporate CEOs what to do?

Wonder how he landed that job?

Awesome first post in the comments below article, by Dan Kimble, who agrees that Newt is our American Churchill:

" I see only one man who has the intellectual overview to fully fathom the peril we are now facing, the verbal virtuosity to clearly articulate all of the ramifications to the nation, and the courage and audacity to take the daring actions necessary to return this nation to the fiscal probity, economic dynamism and the moral substance we exhibited as a nation just a few decades ago."

Dan, wherever you are, GOOD JOB!!!
