Newt grabs himself a South Carolina lifeline. Gingrich wins debate as Mitt Romney stumbles
Mail Online ^ | 17 Jan 12 | Toby Harnden

Posted on 01/17/2012 6:37:23 AM PST by xzins

Newt Gingrich's fluent, policy-rich performances in the early debates, laced with derision for the media's attempts to question the Republican candidates, propelled him to the front of the GOP pack in early December.

His command of the stage here in Myrtle Beach for the 16th (yep, there have been that many, and the next is in Charleston on Thursday) could just be the lifeline he needs to achieve the task he has set himself - overcoming Mitt Romney's clear lead in the South Carolina polls to win the state on Saturday.

Romney was under pressure over releasing his tax returns (he eventually said that he would "probably" do so in April), on why he had not objected as Massachusetts governor to felons on parole having the right to vote and he gave an awkward, fumbling response to a softball about whether he had been hunting since 2007, even mixing up moose and elk.

Gingrich, however, ... scored quite a few points against Romney and the former Speaker's fluency with policy and ability to dissect questions and make a big-picture conservative case against Obama made him the night's big winner.

There were two standing ovations for Gingrich in the hall, where 3,000 Republicans roared, cheered ...

Gingrich said that in the debate room "there was a strong sense that somebody finally just had the courage to tell the truth about how we've got to go about helping people".

"...it's clear if you look at the polls the only conservative who can beat Romney in South Carolina is Newt Gingrich... we have five days to win South Carolina. I think we will win South Cariolina."

A lot of conservatives are queasy about Romney and unconvinced that he could beat the President in November.

Newt won. I wished I liked him.

Well, maybe it's time to start learning to?

I wish one of them would talk about 2nd amendment rights other than hunting. That’s their big ploy now, guns are only for hunters.

Notice they didn’t go to Perry on the gun issue.

The point is Newts past transgressions in his personal life are of little importance. I can vote for Newt without any qualms.

Well, they are important - I wouldn't vote for Newt to become the new pastor of my church.

But for the Presidency, well, I think the expectation that anyone in politics long enough to have a credible shot at the Presidency is going to have a pearly white past is asking a bit too much.

If Newt was reliably like this every day he would be the man.

Trouble is, he slips off the track and wanders off to the left at distressingly frequent intervals.

Another GREAT read about Newt's BIG WIN.

Lots of good excerpts to use to tweet & post article everywhere.

~~”A Mitt debate performance like last night with Obama, gives Obama another 4”. Mitt showed what a weak candidate he is.

Which of the following to leaders in history would you vote for?

Leader one was a vegetarian, decorated war hero, drinks only an occasional beer, does not smoke and has never had an extra martial affair and is physically fit.

Leader two has been voted out of office twice, sleeps until noon, a notorious womanizer as a young man,a mediocre student, alcoholic and obese.

Answer: I would suggest you vote for Leader two. He is Winston Churchill. Leader one is Adolf Hitler.

The point is Newts past transgressions in his personal life are of little importance. I can vote for Newt without any qualms.

Yes. Apologies if my headline comment appeared directed at you.

I completely agree with your comments regarding LRon. I am biased, since I think he's a loon anyway, but last night he was especially creepy (looks, laughs (hehehe), facial expressions, etc.), as you described. How on earth he gets double digits in South Carolina (?!) I will never know.

"somebody finally just had the courage to tell the truth about how we've got to go about helping people"

THAT is what the Tea Party is all about.......now, stick with this theme and win the Nomination so we have the FACTS on the table.

Funny, I watched the entire debate and the person I thought got beat up the most was Obama. It was the first debate I have seen in which everyone's primary target was this administration and it's policies.

In that respect I thought it was the best debate of the season. I was cheering everyone--except Paul, at whom I was laughing.

As for winners, I thought Newt was strong, but I thought Perry was magnificent. Too bad he got off to such a bumbling stumbling start early in his campaign--still he's young enough to make a run in 8 years.

As it stands now, it's time for all conservatives to rally behind Newt and defeat Mitt.

...I don’t know what Romney will do as President. He has changed his position so much he’s scary. So he governed as a liberal in Massachusetts just because it was politically expedient. So, that tells me he has no convictions and just goes along with the majority to secure power. That’s NOT a leader; that’s a typical politician!

Isn't this exactly what is supposed to happen in a representative republic?

Now, I believe Newt is the best candidate we have, and I support him, but accusations that Romney changes his positions to reflect the will of the people is not the way to defeat him. Romneycare and his liberal record are they keys to his defeat.

Just as Newt b*tch-slapped Romney, Juan Williams and Ricardo Santorum, he will b*tch-slap Obama.

...."Newt won. I wished I liked him."....

If you find you can't like him, start hating Romney. 47th in job creation as governor, architect of Obama Care, assault weapons ban, tax hikes, abortion votes, and homo marriage. I guarantee you what's coming after we crown Romney, we will start hearing about him raiding pension funds and sticking the taxpayer with the tab in these "capitalistic takeovers".

Someone please ask how you pay $30 mill for a bankrupt company and walk out with $180 million? It's not the land and buildings and equipment. It's the pension funds. The taxpayer has been hit with hundreds of these "deals" to make the pensions whole on bankrupt companies.

Would it look bad to condemn gov bail outs and then find out Romney was 1st in line at the trough?

If we put Romney in, I am absolutely sure there will be an "October Surprise". Newt has already been vetted. I don't think a proctologist could find any more dirt. That was the beauty of Sarah Palin. We even read her personal email and found nothing. People just "didn't like her."

Kennedy beat Nixon, because he was more likable, not because people thought he would make a better president.

Nixon had been on record that we should not send large numbers of troops into SE Asia, as our experience would be no different than the France’s (which had spent 15 years after WWII fighting and getting bogged down in Vietnam and then finally just abandoned it). This was also Ike’s position, which he informed Kennedy of during their transition meetings.

Kennedy’s position was that we could do a better job than the French had, so he started sending troops into Vietnam. Lyndon Johnson (who never would have been president in the first place, but for being the likable JFK’s VP) escalated it into a full fledged war. Again, believing we could succeed where the French had failed.

Nixon had been right. Our experience in the Vietnam was the same as the French experience after WWII. We got bogged down in a decade long war we had no chance of winning, and then finally just pulled out and abandoned it.

I’m sure the families of the 50,000 men killed in Vietnam (as well as all those wounded) as so thankful we elected the likable John Kennedy, instead of that grumpy old Richard Nixon (who would have never sent troops into Vietnam to begin with).

I just watched the TODAY show, and Karl Rove had the gall to say that Newt “cleverly planted” Juan Williams. WTH??? I’m officially done with having Mitt Romney shoved down my throat, and I will NOT vote for him. Not for any reason...

Maybe he is embarrassed to show how very little tax he paid.

Or how little he gave to charity. Like Algore and Slick.
