18 rounds in 5 seconds: How Glock became ‘America’s gun’
Las Vegas Sun ^ | 18 jan 2012 | J. Patrick Coolican

We’re at Desert Hills Shooting Club near Boulder City, and Paul Barrett steps up with a Glock 17. He fires the 9 mm semi-automatic pistol 18 times in about five seconds and hits the target every time.

In that five seconds, he demonstrates why the Glock is beloved by gun enthusiasts and police officers alike. It’s fast, reliable and offers a lot of stopping power, with three times the number of rounds as the old police favorite, the Smith & Wesson .38 revolver.

Barrett, in town this week for the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT), the big firearms convention, has just published “Glock: The Rise of America’s Gun,” an entertaining and informative history — even if you’re not a gun enthusiast — of the firearm company that redefined the American handgun market beginning in the 1980s.

I remember seeing an old, make that very old advertisement from Savage. It was for their .32 auto which held 10 shots. It showed a cowboy holding the little .32 being attacked by an alligator.

It said “Ten Shots Quick” or maybe it was “Ten Shots Fast”.

Amen. But my brother swears by his, and he's good with it.

I hate the grips on the doublestack glocks. And if I need 18 rounds, well, that's why God made battle rifles.

—always like the one from the 1920’s with the cowboy and his Thompson sub-machine gun holding off the bad guys, rustlers or whatever they were-—

Enjoy it for the few rounds... me and my glock 21 will continue on for 13 rounds or my glock 30 for 10 rounds

Each to his own!

I have several 1911’s (in .45ACP and 9MM) and several Glocks (same calibers).

For fun at the range, you can’t beat the 1911. Big, heavy, looks nice, and lots of character, plus with only a barrel and recoil spring change you can change calibers in under a minute (.45ACP to .400 CorBon or 9MM to .38 Super).

For personal protection the Glock wins hands down. The Glock 26 is small, light, easy to conceal and packs the same punch as the Glock 17 and it fits nicely in a pocket holster in my jacket pocket. For days where I feel the need for a little more protection, the Glock 30 is just as small and nearly as light as the 26, but packs 10 rounds of Federal HST .45ACP hollowpoints.

Different guns for different purposes.

That's not "spray and pray".

Do you even know what "spray and pray" means?

“I’ll take my 1911 over a glock any day of the week....”

Yup! If I’m going to shoot, the 1911 is the best choice. But the Glock is lighter, so people who carry every day and don’t anticipate having to shoot, might choose the Glock.

I like the beavertail safety and thumb safety on the 1911.

For your sake, I hope that you don't actually believe that.

It’s kind of like a Ford vs. Chevy debate. I use to hate Glocks, then I began to realistically see them for their undeniable reliability. They are ugly but they work.

America's gun?

Gaston Glock isn't a 'merkun. John Moses Browning was.
