Rasmussen Reports' latest poll, to be released just minutes from now, shows Newt Gingrich taking the lead in South Carolina.

The poll has Newt Gingrich leading Mitt Romney by two points. It's not a significant lead, but Rasmussen's polling from before Monday's debate showed Romney leading Gingrich, 35 to 21 percent. The full topline result:

Gingrich......33% Romney......31% Paul............15% Santorum....11% Perry............2% Other............1% Not Sure.......6%

Also notice the clue as to why Rick Perry just dropped out.

Santorum needs to drop the ego and do what is best for the country.

At this point, I disagree. If Gingrich can beat Romney with Santorum still in the race, then it's best if Santorum stays in for now, as a strategic "plan B" should Gingrich falter for whatever reason in the near future. There needs to be someone in place to take up the slack in that event, and all other viable options are now out.

Over $400 billion of debt paid off

Can you provide a source for that? Thank you in advance.

This is going to be close enough that we need to be prepared for cheating by Romney’s. Remember the missing votes from those 8 precincts in Iowa? This is going to be a no holds barred battle.

The subtle and a bit hidden good news as far as I can see is that Santorum is getting 11 which is enough of a prize to help Newt when he goes. It is GREAT that Perry was patriot enough to go NOW before tonight's debate to give Newt some extra time to cut down Willard. If Santorum finishes a distant 4th Saturday he will run out of money and give up. He won't support Willard or Uncle Crazy. This is the 17 or so points that Newt should have had all along if Perry Bachmann and/or Santorum had not been in the race. If this was a three man race it would be almost over and Newt could start hacking away at the One.

To quote another eminently sagacious FReeper:

C’mon South Carolina! Git ‘er done!

Another solid debate performance tonight should lock it up for Newt.

And he's likely to be especially fired up and loaded for bear tonight after the MSM's morally depraved attempt to sway elections with an ex-wife story disguised as news.

I can’t vote for Newt or Romney in a general election; big government faux conservatives (Obama lite’s) destroy the message/reputation of conservatism; as it is I am tired of trying to explain to people (so called moderates)that Bush was not really conservative. It looks like I will stay at home this election; let Obama have another term to really let people experience the ravages liberalism.

[We’re going to nominate a serial adulterer? No thanks.]

I’m just wondering how people like you would have dealt with the cussing of Patton or even Eisenhower’s apparent infidelities.

If all we can elect are nice guys like Santorum or even whistle clean Romney, the Augean stalls will never be cleaned. I’d rather go with a fighter who learns from his mistakes.

"Come on Newt. Santorum needs to drop the ego and do what is best for the country."

'Zat right......well let's see here; Santorum beat Newt in both Iowa (where he beat everybody) and New Hampshire.

Soooooooooo......if it's about ego, who needs to drop out now?

Problem is...Newt has so MANY mistakes.

Not only the woman problems. Proposed a health mandate, was all for global warming bunk, called Ryan's plan social engineering. Because he's "seen the light" recently he's all OK?

I'm having a hard time seeing how he's superior to Romney. Oh, yeah...I forgot. He talks better.
